If You're Willing to Work, It's Gold

I've been playing guitar for nearly 20 years but have always been frustrated by my limitations. My only formal training was an intro guitar class in college and a few months worth of private lessons some time later. I taught myself to finger pick to an intermediate level but have never been very accomplished on lead playing and am not versatile at all. I recently stumbled across some info on the Learn & Master Guitar series on a couple of guitar websites and thought it sounded interesting. As I researched the course, I found it nearly unanimously praised and I eventually decided to bite the bullet and spend the $150 (it seems that the course is nearly always "on sale" on their website). I am so glad I did, just wish I'd had this course 20 years ago!

My problem has always been simple ignorance - I had no idea where to begin. This course does a great job of guiding the player from the most basic principals through to more advanced studies. The instructor on the videos is very warm and is a good teacher - he takes things slowly and methodically and explains everything clearly (and he is also a great guitarist). The course does a good job of keeping things dynamic, mixing theory with hands on learning and offering a number of different resources to help the learning process - the DVD sessions, lessons from the workbook, and CDs with accompaniment tracks to jam along with. The content is also quite diverse - you'll work on strumming, finger picking, soloing, chords, scales, rock, blues, and jazz styles, and on and on. The videos are well produced and have a really pleasant vibe. Each session has a suggested time period for mastering that session's material based upon an assumed practice schedule of 15-30 minutes per day. Some sessions may take a week, others a couple of weeks, etc. I think the time estimates are fair for beginners, though some more accomplished players and/or those with prior music theory knowledge may move more quickly through the course. One other very helpful part of the course is the online experience. There is an active community of online users and forums at [...] and the instructor interacts there from time to time in addition to the help & encouragement found from other students.

There are two real sticking points for this course in my opinion. First, your practice time will be self-directed, so lazy folks may not be motivated to follow through. I think this type of course is best suited to self-starter types who are disciplined enough to practice without someone else making them. A flip-side benefit is that you can learn at your own pace based upon your existing skill level and your time availability. Second, this course is pretty heavy on the music theory. For people who just want to learn some cool-sounding riffs and rock out, this course may not be your thing. This series really is about learning and mastering the guitar, and that cannot happen without learning some good solid music theory. This is a strength in my opinion but I know it will turn some others off (heck, I was a 10 year old kid taking piano many moons ago, and I remember how little interest I had in learning to read music!). Highly recommended if you've got the time and inclination to work hard - if that's you then this is money very well spent! This course was initially sold independently but later branded under the Gibson name. It's no wonder Gibson picked it up, it's really good.

Not the expanded version!

As other reviewers have said, this is NOT the expanded version with 20 session DVDs, despite the product picture showing that. I bought it hoping it would be, but will be returning it now. You need to buy the expanded edition to get the 20 DVDs, which apparently is much more useful since the other 10 DVDs contain detailed bonus workshops for each of the 20 sessions. Amazon needs to correct their picture for this listing to only show 10 DVDs instead of 20.

The best guitar course available (by far)

This is a review of "Learn & Master Guitar" with Steve Krenz. Steve Krenz is an amazing instructor. He obviously has years and years of experience teaching guitar to a wide variety of students. The video and audio quality is outstanding. The use of split screen is very effective. For example, showing simultaneous views of right hand, left hand, and the music staff and/or tablature.

This course comes in two editions: the original edition (119) and the extended edition (149). (There is also a home school version.) I purchased the extended version, which supplements the 10 DVDs of the original edition with 10 additional DVDs with practice workshops. I highly recommend getting the extended editions: playing along with Steve on the additional workshop videos is a very effective means for you to learn the material covered in the associated lesson.

This course is (by far) the best video instruction course for guitar. According to the Learn & Master website, this is intended to be a two year course of study. Some folks may be put off by the relatively high price of this course. But consider this: Lots of folks (or their parents) will gladly spend 20 to 60 dollars per week for guitar lessons, without realizing that two years of instruction can easily cost 2000 dollars or more! If I were you, I would spend 1000 to 2000 dollars on a nice guitar, then spend the next two years with this course. Another consideration: Even if you go to a guitar instructor, he or she will probably not be as good (complete, methodical, and accurate) as Steve Krenz. In my youth, I took guitar lessons from several instructors. They were all great guitar players; but they failed to teach me fundamentals that every guitar player should know. "Learn & Master Guitar" is carefully designed to include the skills & knowledge required by all guitar players.

One small drawback to this course is that it may (only at the start) be a little boring for the eager young guitar player who (impatiently) wishes to immediately have some fun playing chords. If you are one of these eager young folks, then I recommend that you first get Fender's "Getting Started on Electric Guitar" or "Getting Started on Acoustic Guitar." Either of these will get you started playing chords straight away. This can certainly be a lot of fun, and will perhaps motivate you to get serious about guitar. With that motivation, you will then be ready for "Learn & Master Guitar."

Steve Krenz covers a lot of good music theory in this course (a little bit each lesson); however, I highly recommend that you also get the Hal Leonard "Music Theory for Guitarists" book (by Tom Kolb) and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory" by Michael Miller. These books will teach you all about keys, tempo, chord construction, chord progressions (the chords to play in any key), and scales.

While "Learn & Master Guitar" starts off with a very basic introduction to reading music, it is NOT based on sight-reading music (as the Berklee courses are). If you wish to learn how to read music, then (by all means) get "A Modern Method for Guitar - Volume 1: Book/DVD-ROM Pack."

Here are a few of the topic covered by "Learn & Master Guitar" (go to their website for more detailed information): How to hold the guitar and pick, right and left hand positions, tuning, notes in the open position, basic music reading (for notes in first position), notes on the 5th and 6th strings (for barre chord and power chord placement), basic open chords (major, minor, seventh, suspended), barre chords with roots on the 5th and 6th strings, strumming (strumming patterns), finger picking, pentatonic scales (movable patterns for all keys), modes (movable patterns for all keys), advanced chords, playing the blues, basic techniques (bends, hammer-on, pull-off, vibrato, palm muting, etc.), advanced strumming, jazz, soloing.

The workshop portion of the DVD (and the extra workshops in the extended edition) are very effective in helping the student learn the guitar. It is like having your own personal instructor. The great thing about the DVD is that you can back up and repeat the instruction as much as you need. When learning the guitar as a beginner, our brains can sometimes learn something new in 30 minutes, but it then takes our fingers a week or more to master what we have just learned. When you go to a guitar instructor, you do not have the benefit of the instructor's help during that week of practice. With this DVD set, you can always replay the DVD to compare your progress against the instructor's playing.

Another great feature about this DVD course is the inclusion of "Jam Along" CDs. I converted these CDs to MP3 files, which I then play through a guitar amp or effects box (along with the guitar).

A teenager or adult will have absolutely no problem going through this course without an instructor's help. Most children will probably benefit from adult guidance. I read on the "Learn & Master" website that the home school version of the course comes with a booklet that is intended to help a parent guide their child through the course (even if the parent does not play guitar).

If you are concerned that your child's interest in guitar might just be a passing fancy, then get either one of the Fender "Getting Started on . . . Guitar" courses first. If, after that, your child has enthusiasm for learning guitar, then the "Learn & Master Guitar" course is your best course you can find. In fact, I feel that it is better than having a live instructor for the beginning guitar player.

Afterwards: There are some great guitar instruction videos available online. For example, search for videos from Berklee, Justin Sandercoe, Joe Satriani, and dolphinstreet. Justin Sandercoe has the best videos (that I know of) for learning string bending and vibrato.

About the Author
E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) was among the most influential, widely read, and revered modernist poets. He was also a playwright, a painter, and a writer of prose. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and, during World War I, served with an ambulance corps in France. He spent three months in a French detention camp and subsequently wrote The Enormous Room, a highly acclaimed criticism of World War I. After the war, Cummings returned to the States and published his first collection of poetry, Tulips & Chimneys, which was characterized by his innovative style: pushing the boundaries of language and form while discussing love, nature, and war with sensuousness and glee. He spent the rest of his life painting, writing poetry, and enjoying widespread popularity and success.

Members of the “animal welfare science community”, which includes both scientists and philosophers, have illegitimately appropriated the concept of animal welfare by claiming to have given a scientific account of it that is more objectively valid than the more “sentimental” account given by animal liberationists. This strategy has been used to argue for merely limited reform in the use of animals. This strategy was initially employed as a way of “sympathetically” responding to the abolitionist claims of anti-vivisectionists, who objected to the use of animals in research. It was subsequently used by farm animal scientists.

The primarily reformist (as opposed to abolitionist) goals of this community make the false assumption that there are conditions under which animals may be raised and slaughtered for food or used as models in scientific research that are ethically acceptable. The tendency of the animal welfare science community is to accept this assumption as their framework of inquiry, and thus to discount certain practices as harmful to the interests of the animals that they affect. For example, animal welfare is conceptualized is such a way that death does not count as harmful to the interests of animal, nor prolonged life a benefit.

If you're looking for a sweet love story, better look elsewhere. But if you want to read a book that's steaming hot, this one's for you!

In this short story based on Emily's series about the Institute, we're introduced to Jane, a young woman who has come to the Institute under false pretenses. She's a journalist there to do an expose of sex trafficking. But once she's admitted, she can't hide her submissive yearnings. Within hours of her arrival, she finds herself undergoing a humiliating but highly arousing punishment exam from a hot young doctor with the promise of much more in store for her.

Emily's series is not for the faint of heart. Her discipline scenes can be harsh. But as in all of her books, this one takes us inside the heroine's mind for a peek at the psychology behind the submission.

I have yet to read The Institute Series, but this hot little tease has intrigued me! I really love how much information is packed into this short story. I like the main heroine a lot. She has gone into this with a certain agenda, and well let's say it changes for her. I won't spoil it, but trust me, you will not be disappointed.

VINOD KUMAR KHANNA, PhD, is a senior scientist working in the solid-state devices division of Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute in Pilani, India. He has been extensively involved for more than twenty years in device, process design and fabrication of power semiconductor devices. He received his PhD in Physics from Kurukshetra University in 1988. A Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers and a lifetime member of several scientific and professional organizations, Dr. Khanna has published over thirty research papers in international journals and conference proceedings and written two previous books entitled, Handbook of Electrical & Electronics Engineering Fundamentals, and Digital Signal Processing, Telecommunications & Multimedia Technology.

Perfect for a 3rd or 4th year neurology elective

This book was originally written as a clinical companion to Kandel, Schwartz, and Jessell's Principles of Neural Science, but it works quite well as a stand-alone for a neurology clerkship. It has the perfect balance of detailed neuroanatomy and clinical relevance. I strongly recommend it to anyone. It's about 300 pages, but it's an easy 300 pages. The first 100 give a detailed neurologic history and physical exam with relevant discussion of neuroanatomy. It's arranged so that during the first 100 pages there are references to specific cases in the last 200 pages so you're constantly flipping to the back for a clinical presentation of whatever pathology you're reading about. It's the perfect length for a 4-week elective. I paid $13 (including shipping) for my used but unmarked copy on Amazon Marketplace.

Intellectual and yet a fun and interesting introduction to the Neurological exam - and common Neurological disorders. Dr. Brust is a great teacher. This is evident in the way he conveys his approach to clinically relevant neural science.

thorough book

really excellent alternative to case files for the neuro clerkship. the first 85 pages are a thorough review of the neuro exam with clinical correlates for almost every possible abnormal finding. i found this section helpful during my interactions with patients to think through the pathophysiology. the rest of the book is comprised of 78 cases (hpi, physical exam findings, relevant lab findings, etc.) each followed by in-depth explanations. each case is also referenced in the first part of the book alongside it's relevant neuro exam findings. i thought it was very good prep for the shelf and although i didn't use case files for this clerkship, i liked this book better than the standard case files setup.

Still the Authoritative Reference, but...

Having been a fan of Mark Russinovich's for some time now, I always look forward to new editions of the Windows Internals book. I own the fourth and fifth editions, and a week ago I purchased the sixth edition, which is now released in two parts. Part 1 is the subject of this review.

Since I also own the fifth edition of this work, I was able to review both editions side-by-side and the differences are not significant. The sixth edition expands a little more on some topics, but IMHO there is not a whole lot of new information considering the incremental nature of the upgrade from Windows 6.0 to 6.1, and the minor differences between the Windows 6.0 (Vista and Server 2008) and Windows 6.1 (Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2) kernels.

Part 1 prepares the reader by explaining basic concepts and giving an overview of Windows system architecture. It then addresses System Mechanisms, such as Trap Dispatching and the Image Loader, and Management Mechanisms, such as the Registry, and Windows Services. It then deals with Processes, Threads and Jobs in detail, before concluding with treatments of Security, and finally Networking. Additionally, to enhance understanding, explanations are bolstered by practical, hands-on experiments.

Part 2, however, contains some of my favorite topics, but this volume won't be available until later this fall. These topics include Input/Output, Storage Management, Memory Management, File Systems, and the Startup and Shutdown Process. I guess I will have to wait for the release of Part 2 to review these.

As far as ratings go, I give this sixth edition of Windows Internals the same five-star rating as its predecessor. Although not a ground-breaking work, it is a well-researched and well-presented technical reference, worthy of the highest commendation. However, my issue is not with the technical merits of this reference, but with the protracted nature of its release, and its subsequent release in two parts, likely half a year apart.

Considering that Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 are only incremental upgrades to Windows Vista and Server 2008, and much of the fifth edition of Windows Internals applies to the current versions of these operating systems as well, I am baffled by the length of time it is taking to complete the sixth edition.

The only thing I can speculate is that Russinovich's new career as a successful novelist (with his second novel due out in September) leaves him little time to complete this current project.

Maybe it might be time to consider reducing the scope of the Windows Internals books to something less ambitious so they can be released in a timelier manner. Because, let's face it, by the time Part 2 of this book is released, Windows 8 will already be upon us, and then this work, no matter how authoritative, will have markedly less significance. Nevertheless, this book is still recommended.

Mind blowing detail

Context for this review:

I'm not certain that I am the target audience for this book. I think it's more for programmers who require an intimate knowledge of the Windows OS for their work. I am not a programmer, but I do work in IT.

So, maybe this is light reading if you already know the difference between a spinlock and pointer. I am no stranger to difficult technical reading (I have a BS, CCNP and MCSA), but this book was like the mental equivalent of hiking up a freaking mountain. Rugged.

That said, I recommend it. I was frustrated because after years of working in IT and earning several Microsoft certifications, I still ran into whole sections of the OS that I'd never heard of before and had no idea what they did (What the hell is DCOM?).

I'm not aware of any other books that go into this level of detail regarding the Windows OS. I'm glad I read it and I'm working my way through the second book now.

As Advertising

This book delivers as advertised. It is a deep dive into the Windows architecture and as advertised is targeted toward developers. I am not a developer but was looking for a book that might give me insight into the things I see as a computer technician. Much of what is in this book is beyond my understanding and need. However, there is enough that hits home that I'm glad that I purchased it.

A main feature of the book is examples. The author does a very nice job of providing examples so you can see how the architecture blocks function and relate to each other. I have only read about 100 pages so far but am glad that I bought the book.

5. The book is ambitious and covers many topics but it does so at a price, the lack of depth.
In summary, the book succeeds in covering many topics of interest in the gun debate. The question-and-answer format worked well and provides readers with a handy reference. A few missed opportunities aside keeps the book from attaining a five-star score but overall it’s a useful book. I recommend it!

Gives a great "impression" on impressionism

A great book to give an idea on impressionism. I liked that there was an introduction to explain the main characters - never knew that Manet played such a big role also on the human side - and all the difficulties these painters had to even be recognized as proper artists. Aso liked that there were interesting explanations on each of the 50 paintings. So, easy to read, a joy to look at the paintings, particularly as I have seen quite a number of the originals so can now relate to them even better.

it's cool

I'm an art teacher and I love this series of books for making warm ups for my art kids. It's generally a good short description of the artwork or artist with some interesting facts and good pictures. This isn't the book for someone looking for something really in depth stuff but if you just want a brief refresher they are great.

This book is set up differently than the rest of the series and I don't like this set up quite as much but it's still pretty good.
