Decent question book

The book contains 50 questions on each of 11 topics and explains the answers for each. As with all question books, there is frequently an unclear explanation on why the correct answer is the best, or why the incorrect answers are not. This seemed to be particularly the case in the neruoophthalmology section. Some have criticized that these questions are easier than those on the written qualifying exam, and I tend to agree. It is probably a better OKAP study aid for first or second year residents, lest one get a false sense of security when studying for the actual exam. It is an inexpensive source of CME credits, with each section worth 3 hours of AMA category 1 credits.
I find these prices laughable, considering on AAO.org you can get it at the nonmember price for $265, and many in the market for this book should be an AAO member and can get it new for $195.

A charming, though dated, road novel

This is the story of a nine year old boy who, on a quest to impress his emotionally distant father, runs away to patent a bubble gun he has invented. He has adventures en route, including getting in the middle of a comically failed bit of soviet espionage. One character, a broadly drawn homosexual, feels very dated. I had several business meetings with Americans and I understood everything, I mean everything they said. That didn't happen to me before using Whaddaya say?. I also learned to use reduced forms to improve my speed. But the most important thing is the almost magical change in my understanding. A suggestion is to follow carefully the instructions, then listen to each conversation and repeat it many times. The book is also great source of expressions and uses, not just reduced forms. Best book on Relaxed Speech ever written

If you want to speak like a Native American, this book will be very useful to you. This is an excellent book which is very organized to cover each and every reduced form (wanna, gonna, gotta etc.) with lots of examples and exercises. This book covers pronunciation changes that occur in fast speech. The audio of this book is available at author’s website www.easyenglish.us.com I bought this book and downloaded the audio files from author’s web site. I have been finding it very useful and I love this book. There are 30 chapters in this book and you can quickly learn most of it if you listen to audio of each chapter while you study the chapters. I don’t think there is any other book available in market which covers Relaxed Speech anywhere close to the contents of "Whaddaya Say". I came to know that the author field tested "Whaddaya Say", at Harvard University where she worked as a teaching fellow. I recommend this book to those who want to speak like Native Americans. I think this book is worth the price and it is beyond comparison. I am impressed with the amount of research done by author to come up with this masterpiece.

Fast-Spoken English in a Fast-Moving World

Whaddya say is a practical book for serious-minded second language learners of English who want to communicate quickly in real world settings.
Formal English listening/speaking training in pre-college classrooms prepares students to carefully articulate prepared speeches, but it lacks in preparing English language learners to listen and respond to real world conversations in dynamic domains. Typical examples (although, not included in the present book) might include conversations that take place in the stock market and conversations between pilots and air traffic controllers. In both situations, the verbal component of communications is time sensitive. Nina Weinstein's book and tapes focus on enhancing listening and speaking skills using both slow and relaxed, fast-spoken English.
Nina Weinstein outlines the most commonly used reduced forms of English sounds in twenty short chapters, introducing the most simple reduced sounds (like you --> ya) to the more complex reduced sounds that are found in advanced grammatical structures (coulda, woulda, mighta).
Whaddaya say incorporates short, yet practical conversational exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercises require the Whaddaya say cassette tape. Completion of this book, accompanied with a professional ESL instructor, will result in an increased situational and linguistic awareness of the ESL learner's surroundings.

About the Author

Sheila Hancock is one of Britain's most highly regarded and popular actors--since the 1950s she has enjoyed a career across film, television, theater and radio. Her first big television role was in the BBC sitcom The Rag Trade in the early 1960s. She has directed and acted for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Her first book, Ramblings of an Actress, was published in 1987. Following the death of her husband, John Thaw, Sheila Hancock wrote a memoir of their marriage, The Two of Us, which was a no. 1 bestseller and won the British Book Award for Author of the Year in 2004. Her memoir of her widowhood, Just Me, also a bestseller, was published in 2008. She lives in London and France.

Nope sorry ! ... Historical review of 50 s 60s70s but no depth to any of the characters so really rather dull unfortunately ... At the beginning marguerite is described as an exotic fashion forward French lady with an exciting secretive past in wartime ... But as the story unfolds she develops into a bit of a pathetic frump ... I was disappointed and especially so when she meets up again with marcel at the end who has remained in his hamlet all those intervening 30 + years farming ? ... Please ... No ... I LOVE Sheila Hancock as an actress ... Not so much as a writer unfortunately ,,, I wouldn't recommend this book unless to a very young person who would like an overview of English history after the way to the 80s ?

I managed 3/4 of the book. I just had to give up. I don't think it was particularly well-written. I thought the beginning was quite interesting, as it described quite well post war England but the book was really about the trials and tribulations of education and two quite boring characters. Enough said.....

Musically, the album was groundbreaking for its mix of improvisational music and Dionysian lyrics. As both an artist and a woman, she broke new ground.

Smith released three more albums before abruptly walking away from her fame in 1980. She reemerged in the mid-'90s to reshape her image and astound fans with her dynamic performances. Smith's impact on rock music―her rebellion against gender roles, her charismatic performances, her merging of poetry and music, and the way she's aged as a rock star―has been vast. She has redefined what it means for women to be rock performers and blazed trails for many other popular female musicians to follow after her. Individual chapters examine individual albums and account for parallel developments in Smith's life. Tarr concludes his work with an examination of the influence Smith has had on pop culture and on rock 'n' roll in general. Patti Smith is a guarded and private person, and little has been written about her. In this searching analysis of Smith's life and work, author Joe Tarr has filled a huge gap and provided an essential guide to the iconic artist's career.

America's Second Treaty with Britain

If you have an interest in international relations, American history in the 1780s and 90s, or Anglo-American relations, then Jay's Treaty by Samuel Flagg Bemis should be on your reading list.

The book presents the diplomatic situation among the US, Britain, and France from the 1783 treaty ending the Revolutionary War to the conclusion of Jay's Treaty in 1794. In addition to British recognition of American independence, the 1783 treaty provided for:

* American control of the region roughly bounded north of the Ohio River, south of the Great Lakes, and east of the Mississippi River
* British evacuation of five forts located in the above territory on the Great Lakes or St Lawrence River
* British restoration or compensation for American slaves carried away by British troops
* Repayment of American debts to British creditors

By the early 1790s, none of the above treaty provisions had been satisfied. In addition:

* British forces at Detroit (one of the five forts on US territory) had rebuilt and occupied an additional fort south of Detroit
* British officials were seeking to establish trade agreements directly with Americans in the western territories and the new state of Vermont with the goal of detaching these territories from the United States
* British officials were supplying arms to Indian tribes in US territory between the Ohio River and Great Lakes, encouraging conflict between the Indians and American settlers in that area
* Simultaneously, the British proposed to mediate the US conflict with the western Indian Tribes on the basis of creating a neutral buffer state between the US and Canada, carved out of the US territory between the Ohio and Great Lakes
* Finally, after war had broken out between Britain and Republican France, the British redefined "contraband" to include food as well as military items and seized several American ships carrying food to French islands in the Caribbean

Needless to say, many Americans, especially those supporting the party then forming around Jefferson, felt that these British provocations could lead to war. The situation was complicated by Jefferson's role as Secretary of State in Washington's first administration (1789-93) and the leading American Francophile. The situation was further complicated by the fact that Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury, primary confidant of President Washington, and the leading Anglophile in America, was in direct contact with the British minister to the US, bypassing the Secretary of State.

In the treaty of 1794, John Jay negotiated solutions to most of the issues listed above and prevented (at least until 1812) another war with Britain, one that the US was probably too weak to have survived in the 1790s. There has been some debate on whether Jay could have extracted more concessions from Britain, but that seems doubtful, especially since the British were reading his coded correspondence and knew the US bargaining position.

Originally published in 1923, a revised 1965 paperback edition of Jay's Treaty can be found used. The language of Bemis' text is slightly archaic while that of the quoted source document is even more so. Still, the book is well worth the effort for those interested in the subject matter.

About the Author
Phil Griffiths is a lecturer at Nottingham Trent University with interests in contract administration, finance and project management. He graduated from Nottingham Trent Polytechnic in 1971 and worked as a quantity surveyor in local authority and a medium sized construction company. He also spent some time as a director of a small construction company and is a freelance estimator.
