A True Classic

King Ottakar's Scepter is one of the top 5 Tintin titles. It's a wonderful, mile-a-minute adventure that fans of Indiana Jones will easily recognize. In addition, it introduces the wonderful country of Syldavie, recognizable to all true Tintin fans.

In comparison to Herge's later, more deliberate works, this one throws Tintin about like a cork on the ocean, with every page having at least four incredible escapes from danger or death. Some of them are nearly impossible to believe (Tintin survives being dropped out of an airplane?), but on the other hand they make "Scepter" more enjoyable and more authentic to the golden age of rip-roaring comic serials. If you're just starting to buy Tintin, put this at the top of the list.

I can't be wholly objective about Tintin. I've been reading the books since I was in elementary school, following Tintin's amazing adventures from the Middle East to the Moon. The boy reporter is great for kids, but he's also entertaining for adults.

Two notes:
- This is a reworking of the original artwork, done by Herge himself post World War II. This is evident in the more mature, vibrant, and polished artwork. To understand more about this, look up Tintin and Herge in Wikipedia. In short, Herge did the strips that form this book before World War II in an earlier, more primitive style that reflects their original appearance in newspapers. He re-did many of these early strips later on. I, for one, believe that the later result is better, although you ought to try to find one of the earlier books to see what I mean.
- You won't get a true feeling for Tintin if you read "him" in translation. French is full of idioms and connotations that don't survive translation, and even then, Tintin is a Belge, not a Francais! Worst of all, the "English" translations are British English that use idioms and language that Americans won't recognize. I really believe that Tintin is worth learning French for.

Can't go wrong with Tintin and Milo

I read this book for a college level French course for our bédé portion. Super easy to follow and understand if you know basic French but there are words and phrases that aren't commonly used today but that's only because this is a classic and has been around for quite sometime. If you're looking to brush up on your skills or relax with a well known bédé, this would be a lovely start.

what better way to introduce them to their ancestral language

This brings back " mes souvenirs d'enfances.....quand j'etais moins vieux.." Tintin, Capitaine Haddock, Professeur Tournesol, Milou, are all classic which must be passed on to the next generation...notably my children...as this undoubtedly expose them to the "better cartoons" and idols instead of the Spongebob et al. Besides, what better way to introduce them to their ancestral language.

About the Author
Nina Simon is an independent experience designer with expertise in participatory design, gaming, and social technology. She is the principal of Museum 2.0, a design firm that works with museums, libraries, and cultural institutions worldwide to create dynamic, audience-driven exhibitions and educational programs. In addition to design work, Nina lectures and gives workshops on visitor participation. She is an adjunct professor of social technology in the University of Washington Museology program. Nina authors the Museum 2.0 blog, which also appears as a column in Museum magazine. She is also a member of the board of the National Association of Museum Exhibitions. Previously, Nina served as Curator at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA, and was the Experience Development Specialist at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. Inspiring book, full of great case studies and workable ideas

In The Participatory Museum, Nina Simon argues that the social web has changed the way that people relate to one another and the world, and makes a case for introducing participatory design to cultural institutions.

The Participatory Museum offers compelling real-life examples and case studies of cultural institutions that have adopted new media strategies to help fulfill their institutional missions. These new media strategies do not always (and often do not) take place on the web. Rather, Simon is concerned with gleaning knowledge from web and new media interactions, and apply this knowledge to the real world.

Simon looks for inspiration in unexpected places. The case studies and examples that Simon cites are not limited to the museum world nor even to cultural institutions. She broadens her case studies to include for-profit corporations. including Netflix, Nike, and Harrah's Casinos.

Translating the participatory nature of social media to a museum sounds like a great idea. But as Simon is quick to acknowledge, this process is harder than it sounds. So how can museums design good participatory experiences? The bulk of the book is devoted to answering that question, so I will just briefly summarize some of Simon's most compelling points.

First, Simon acknowledges that not everyone WANTS to participate. For this reason, Simon suggests that participatory techniques should only be one of the interpretive techniques used by a museum.

Second, even when people do want to participate, they will participate in different ways.

Third, the use of cutting-edge technology is not neccessary to build a good participatory experience. Some of the options that Simon explores are decidedly low-tech.

Finally, museums should not pursue participatory unless it is really relevant to their mission. Institutions should only be asking questions that they care about and always, always, always be prepared to listen to the answers.

Most importantly to me as a reader, Simon is not just talking the talk. She posted her book online creating a dynamic piece of content where users can access her bibliography, review the book, comment on specific chapters, and add their own case studies. Simon is walking the walk by designing a truly participatory reader experience.

Excellent Design Approaches for Creating Social Interactive Environments in Museums

When I read the book I felt my self doing my PhD about modern museology. I learned designing participatory projects in cultural institutions and museums with an analytical and systematic approach. I learned developing visitor profiles and design methods for creating socially interactive environments in the museums and in cultural institutions. There are also very good and effective examples and case studies. I will use these designing methods in my work, which is designing and realizing museums both interior design and content development... Dear Nina, thank you very much ... not just for museums!

I don't work in a field related to museums at all. I sell enterprise software, but a common problem plaguing all businesses these days is how to stay relevant in a world where the public expects a level of interaction that the classic didactic experiences don't provide. Consumers want a high level or personalization, and interaction creates rich "sticky" experiences. I would recommend this book to anyone in experience design, shopper marketing, or anyone who ever has to has to stand a trade show booth.

One of the best things about this book is that she explains concrete approaches to make experiences more interactive and these are all based on case studies, there's little or no hand waving and pontification.

Definitely recommended!

"Two weeks in Eternal Egypt" is a travel memoir, where the author travels to Egypt. The rich and easy narrative style is impressive. The author, who wants to spend some good time with his wife, goes through a lot of unexpected circumstances during his tour in Egypt. Starting from the tour agent to the citizens, everyone seemed intent on getting money from tourists, instead of helping them feel at home. He was tricked at times by local people, but he soon learns how to manage them.

The poverty, the culture and the desperation of the people of Egypt is described in an excellent way. The author takes the readers through all of the Egypt's historical locations with the stories behind each monuments and places. Usually these sort of things doesn't interest me much, but this was like listening to a friend who had gone to some place where you haven't been. You can't help but get amused by some of the details listed about Egypt and get disappointed at some others.

Although I like to travel, I don't get much of an opportunity to do so. These experiences seemed so true and real that I want to be careful and ready, when I someday make the travel myself to Egypt. But, of course, after reading about Egypt from author's point of view, I actually am not pretty sure whether I would want to visit Egypt. I want to go to some place where I can feel pleasant and safe.

Overall, a very good travel memoir. If you are interested in travel or memoirs, then this is definitely recommended.

About the Author
E. J. Robinson was born in Northern California, but migrated south to attend UCLA where he studied literature and creative writing. After graduating, he work for a number of prominent producers and film studios. He's written for both TV and film, sold screenplays to Walt Disney studios, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Spyglass, SyFy Channel, and a host of others. He's also written reality TV, webisodes, commercials, low budget films, plays, restaurant menus and tombstone epitaphs. He currently lives in So. Cal with his wife, two sons, and two dogs. He enjoys book collecting, football and beer snobbery. Everything a sequel should be

I was first introduced to E.J. Robinson's series Robinson Crusoe when I received a free audio book copy of Book 1. I really enjoyed it (https://smile.amazon.com/review/R3VVJ2I8ZZXYOT/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm). I eagerly but not patiently awaited the sequel Book 2. Robinson Crusoe 2245 (Book 2) is everything a sequel should be. It maintains the same high level of action as the first book. The familiar characters continue to grow and develop. New characters are introduced and enhance the story. More information about the universe the series exists in, how it came to be, and the different cultures that inhabit it are revealed. I am now not only waiting, not patiently, for Robinson Crusoe (Book 2) to be released as an audio book narrated by Malk Williams but also for the release of Book 3. Excellent series both as a book and audio book. Thank you to Audio Book Blast for introducing me to a great new author in E.J. Robinson.

Great series

Robinson Crusoe 2245 picks up where book #1 in the series left off. The cure for the virus was successfully launched in England and those infected around the world returned to normal. The Flayers have sailed south along the Mississippi river for the winter to their main camp, Friday is still a captive of the leader of this warring group. Readers also learn that the king of the city is the leader's brother and he wants Friday for himself.

Robinson returns to America and begins searching for Friday along the large river. During his quest, he comes across many different tribes and groups of people - most living a devasting life after being raided by the warring group on their way home. It is in one such place where a group of Flayers were attacking a homestead of Mennonites along the river. Robinson and the group he was traveling with helps them defeat their attackers and then learns from one of the wounded where their main camp is located. The dying captive also made him aware that Friday was still alive - eight months now after she was taken captive. Robinson's motivation is renewed in the search for his captive love.

During his remaining trip, Robinson is taken prisoner by two separate groups - one, a large group of cowboys led by "Boss" and second, by Friday's tribe, who thought the Princess (Friday) was already dead. In both situations, Robinson is certain that he will die there in captivity. However, he finds inside help in both situations and eventually reaches the Flayer's camp.

From that point, the race is on. Robinson's former enemies from England had teamed up with the Flayers to secure the virus which started the epidemic at the CDC in Atlanta. Can anybody stop them? Will Robinson and his love survive? Will the lethal virus be secured and dispersed to begin a much more dangerous epidemic. The story does end with a cliff-hanger and the author's promise to publish book #3 in the near future. I will be watching for its release.

Don't miss this series, it is well worth reading and hard to put down.

Even Better Than Book One!

This second book of E.J. Robinson's post-apocalyptic series, RC 2245, takes up where RC 2244 left off, as his young idealist hero begins a quixotic quest to find Friday, his missing soulmate.

The devastated lands of old America hold little promise, but harbor, instead, a toxic milieu of unrivaled dangers: savage fiefdoms ruled by arrogant warlords, ancient tribes, desperate villagers, and horrible mutants. A man alone cannot survive here without friends, but even Crusoe's allies are temporary at best.

Beset by hidden agendas and the ever-present risk of betrayal, he weaves a path toward his beloved, one crafted from his skill in battle, his cunning, and not a little luck.

The story has a Mad Max feel to it, but the underlying personal dramas keep it from being "just" blood and gore. The action simply does not stop. When you come to the end, you'll crave more. Fortunately, Book 3 is in the offing as this exciting SF saga continues.

To maximize the performance of an automotive engine, it must be balanced and blueprinted. Great Illustrations and Precise Instructions

My gosh! This book is amazing, but is not for the faint of heart. If you are an occassional fixer uper who changes his/her own oil and maybe some spark plugs or brakes, this book is NOT for you. However, if you are delving into engine building and specs, this book is a great source book to keep on the shelf for referencing. It'll remind you of precise measurements and tools to use in particular circumstances while blueprinting an engine. The book also discusses what true blueprinting is vs. the generic "blueprinting" vocabulary that is loosely thrown out there by many mechanics.

It's a great teaching tool for those just starting engine blueprinting and an excellent resource for those professional blueprinters as well. Well worth the purchase. The book is all about precision, precision, precision of ALL engine parts! Great illustrations too!

Again, just as a reminder, this book is for those into building engines to precise measurements. This practice involves lots of financial resources and instruments. If you are not already into blueprinting or planning on it, then this book is not for you. The reading level of this informational text is very advanced, but is awesome if you understand the lingo in the art of blueprinting.

Another great book from Car Tech. Informative and entertaining, every part is analyzed for function and techniques used to optimize it for better performance. Even push rods need special attention, who'd a thunk it. Weather you are building a killer race engine or the ultimate street machine, this book is a must use referance. And if you are a gear head who wants to better understand what goes on behind the scenes, why do succesful engine builders get the big bucks and are held in such high esteem; this book is for you. Thank you Mike!

ENGINE BLUEPRINTERS: This Book is a Must-Have

I have always had a strong interest in Cars and Engines. Whereas I have rebuilt an engine or two, I have never Blueprinted one..... this book gives you the written tools to do so and I would feel very confident following the instructions and using the great illustrations to complete such a project. Mike Mavrigian has done a wonderful job and CarTech has once again given us a great book to add to our Auto Libraries. Anyone thinking about Engine Blueprinting should have this book.
