Beautiful story but disappointed with the ending

I really struggled with how to review this book. I'm giving it a 2, not because it's a poorly written book, but because I wanted to offer a contrasting review to those who are giving it high ratings. (I know that personally, I always look at the 1 and 2 star ratings to find out why some people had a different perspective, so that's what I offer here) Julie Cantrell's "Into the Free" series was just beautiful, so I looked forward to reading this one, "The Feathered Bone" as well. However, this book was just far too sad for me. While I'm sure the author intended it to be a "triumph over tragedy" story that shows how even through the darkest of circumstances, life must go on and it can go on with faith and renewed hope, I did not reach the end of this book and feel hope. I felt devastated.

I really think that your perspective on this book will have a lot to do with your personal faith, your own comfort level and how willing you are to face your worst fears and believe there is still hope on the other side of horrible things happening to you. The main character in this book, Amanda, and those around her, face so many difficult things that as a reader, it's hard not to feel assaulted such a range of negative emotions that you almost want to set the book aside.

It doesn't start off that way. If you picked up the book, you already know the basic premise. I'll admit, at first, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, but I think that's because the human heart wants to hope and I couldn't wait to get to the positive outcome after so much heartbreak. However, though the author brings about a positive outcome in her own way, through the strengthening of the main character's faith and through the survivalist mentality of other characters, I did not get the full, positive outcome that I had feverishly flipped through so many pages to find.

I will give Julie Cantrell credit for capturing the truth in these terrible circumstances. Not everything in life is left in a tidy bow at the end. But I think many of us who read want fiction to have a happier ending than real life often does. It doesn't have to be 100% happy because it needs to be realistic, but I think most of us are satisfied with "more happy than sad." In this case, I was just more sad.

Julie Cantrell cites several different inspirations for this story, one of them being the story of Elizabeth Smart. If you followed the cases of Elizabeth Smart, Jaycee Dugard, or Shawn Hornbeck you understand that these abducted children can never "undo" what they went through and that they were changed by their experiences. Because of being so focused on the bad things that happen to these children, we may not often think about what is happening in the day to day lives of those that child left behind and what might be drastically different even if that child returns.

In this book, Julie Cantrell already has so many things going on in the lives of the characters that it's a constant battle to stay positive and then she heaps additional sadness onto people who have already suffered enough. In the moment that she did that, I lost all hope of a positive ending to the book because it was no longer possible, at least in the way I'd hoped for all along.

I went ahead and finished it, of course, because I wanted to see what the author's intent was in all of this. It's then that you get that it's more of a triumph in the battle of the mind than what actually happens in the circumstances of the characters.

From strictly a writing standpoint, there were two parts I had an issue with. I didn't feel like the missing girl's mother was realistic enough, or maybe her character was just underdeveloped. Most of us probably can't imagine going on with everyday life if a child was missing. We'd like to think we'd be pounding the pavement every hour of every day looking for that child. While the mother does look for the child and IS emotional, she's not portrayed as having the total breakdown that would be more believable. Also, the long-awaited climactic moment of the story was a bit anti-climactic. THIS was what I'd been waiting for through days of reading, and yet, when it came, the means by which it came and the dialogue wasn't what I would have expected. A very central character did not react at all the way I thought they should. I felt like I was more upset by the previous plot twists and turns than this character was.

Don't get me wrong, Julie Cantrell is a wonderful author. There is a certain poetry to her wording and she plunges you into the depths to make you think on things you may have never thought of on your own. And this IS a beautiful story if you are satisfied with the characters just growing and changing within themselves. But, if you are expecting or wanting a certain outcome, you may just end up sad, as I did.

Fantastic Read

Honestly, I chose “The Feathered Bone” because it was one of the choices that was still offered as a “real life, hold in my hand, tangible” book. After reading through the first few pages, I wondered if I would like this story because I felt that the author’s descriptions of the surroundings and goings-on bogged down the tale. But, I muscled through. And I am glad I did.
“The Feathered Bone” addresses a few of the tragic issues facing our Country today. One of those is the atrocity of human trafficking. The author weaves together a story that prompts the reader to sit on the edge of his seat. But, it’s not a story for the faint of heart.
The horror of human trafficking coupled with an unexpected tragedy, brought tears to my eyes. In fact, at one point I laid the book aside to pick up a few groceries at the store. As I pushed the cart up and down the aisles, I hoped the scene I left was only a horrific nightmare. Yes, the author did that good of story telling to draw me in.
I look forward to reading other books by Julie Cantrell.

Solid Survey of Political Thought!

In a lengthy and readable manner, White (Arizona State University) provides a capable introduction to major political philosophers in the Western tradition. Generally, the text follows a traditional approach by surveying seminal thinkers and texts, but the author, influenced by recent efforts to place political philosophy "within the context of a more comprehensive moral, philosophical, or religious point of view" (p. 414), provides a supplemental basis of analysis for the reader to contemplate as well. The underlying argument of the text is most laudable, but insufficient use is made of the recent scholarship that most closely conforms to this mode of interpretation.

As a second edition, the book includes a new chapter on Cicero, and new sections on Marsilius of Padua and John Stuart Mill. The chapter on Cicero addresses the interconnectivity between reason and morality in Cicero's political thought. Additional contributions of the text are the author's attempt to introduce, and then explicate, the "enduring issues" of political philosophy as a framework (pp. 13-17) for better understanding contemporary politics, and the thoughtful treatment of Christianity's role in shaping the political thought of the West (chapter 6).

This Book Rocks!

Flower Power is an amazing book. I learned how to create so many professional floral designs and I have no experience. Michael Gaffney's way of teaching is so easy to understand and his story is a great read. The book contains so many simple tips for anyone to create a beautiful floral arrangement. Michael also reveals some of his secrets on floral design which he used on movie sets and for teaching celebrities! The book also makes a great coffee table book with plenty of beautiful pictures of floral arrangements and landscapes. Highly recommended for any one who is into DIY. His other book, Design Star, is equally as great!

Skip it, there's nothing to learn from this book.

If you want a book with a hundred pictures of men in business suits standing around awkwardly holding bouquets of flowers, then this is the book for you. Otherwise, skip it. There are only a few examples of floral design in here, and even less bits of useful advice. Just go look Gaffney up on YouTube and learn from him there, you might actually learn something there, as opposed to this book.

A book for anyone wishing for THE DREAM job in the IT industry

I am myself a software professional for the past 3 years, and i still could learn a lot many things after reading this book. It presents a whole new perspective on how to code and gives you the answers to a lot many WHYs of coding. It is not the normal "learn the syntax" coding book. The author has done an awesome job of combining the syntax and semantics into one book. Normally when someone firstly starts writing production quality code, he/she does not thinks of the after affects of the code. Only after gaining years of experience does this quality comes in. But the author has made the reader think in this direction. The reader will not only learn how to CODE but will learn HOW to code in a way that maintainence of code is not an issue.

Also the author has touched on various issues which are normally not taught in college text books but a person only learns from his own experience.

All in all, i highly recommend this book especially to all the college student or people who are not satisfied in their current roles and are looking to acquire more skills and work on better systems.

4) Understanding Code
5) Dexterous Debugging
6) Program analysis and Some More Important Tools
7) Software Testing
8) Version Control System
9) Defect Tracking
10) Product Shipment Cycle

There are 3 appendices covering Error Handling in Java, Installing open source software and Integrating cscope with vim.

There are step by step guidelines in most of the chapters listed above, supplemented with code snippets and screenshots.

The authors have used their insights gained over a few years, from their professional work in leading software companies. A new entrant to this industry, especially students would find this book very handy in terms of how to make the transition from theory to practice, from textbooks to shipped code.

About the Author
Kathleen Stassen Berger completed her undergraduate education at Stanford University and Radcliffe College, earned her M.A.T. from Harvard University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Yeshiva University. Her broad range of experience as an educator includes directing a preschool, teaching philosophy and humanities at the United Nations International School, teaching child and adolescent development to graduate students at Fordham University, teaching inmates earning paralegal degrees at Sing Sing Prison, and teaching undergraduates at both Montclair State University and Quinnipiac University. She has also been involved in education as the president of Community School Board in District Two in Manhattan.

Duplicate Edition

If you are taking a child development class this is the book you should use. The only down side was someone in the class had the 8th edition and the wording between both books was almost word for word. So unless you get a class that uses the 10th edition just save the money and buy the 8th edition. For the most part the book was great and really put everything out there, I just couldn't get past how much it was a copy of edition 8.

Textbook for Teaching Course

This text was required for an online class I took. I loved the convenience of being able to order it from Amazon and have it instantly on my Kindle! Also, having the choice to rent or buy on many textbooks is an awesome option to save some money. Delightfully Different Xmas Tale

Dean Koontz is my favorite writer, so despite my daughter only being 2, I had to get this for her. It has gorgeous illustrations and rhyming text. Santa's twin brother decides to tie Santa up and ruin Xmas. He's tired of being outshined by his brother, Santa and decides to make everyone hate him instead. He lands in a house and leaves horrible presents and ruins their house but his plans are foiled by the two sisters who live there. They overhear what he's done and decide they are the only ones who can save Santa. They rescue Santa and scold his evil twin. Why what would your mother think, they ask him and he realizes the err of his ways. This book is fun reading with wacky descriptions and imaginable ryhmes. The last page asks you if you noticed all the snowmen hiding on each page. They watch over us and report back to Santa. How else would Santa know who's been naughty or nice. My sister and mother in law had a blast trying to find the snowmen. This is a wonderful Xmas tale thet kids will delight in. It isn't scary at all, it's more comical.

Koontz never ceases to impress me

I'm 36 and bought the book for myself! It will be an annual Christmas Eve tradition. I read it to my two nieces - 8 & 11 - and they enjoyed almost as much as i did. I especially loved the line - "they could do it. They were sisters" since I love to stress the importance of this relationship to these sisters. The humor he uses throughout makes it a joy to read again and again. the illustrations are gorgeous - and we had fun searching for the artist's signature within the artwork.
