If the reader can get past the nostalgia of the draftsmanship, and understand the communication that is taking place - black and white photos matched with actual construction documentation - then one should begin to understand the educational component. The idea is being able to have what an AutoCAD library doesnt, a matched pair of construction details with a photo of the constructed landscape element. Some early career professionals and, particularly, students may benefit from having a three dimentional representation of landscape elements. It helps to be able to see the finished product and a detail of the guts - you simply have better comprehension of what goes into construction and how the components come together.

As for criticism of this piece, understand that most of the landscape features look dated - railroad tie retaining walls out of the 70's, glass block fountains from the 80's, heavy timber playgrounds that no municipality would ever build due to liability - theyre all in here! A Quick Read With Just A Little Spice

I download this as a free book offering many months ago and finally had a chance to read it. I found it to be a quick read that never got too heavy. The characters are fun but I did not find myself developing an attachment to the like I do with many of the other books I have red recently. All in all, not a bad read, with a little spice thrown in for good measure.

Brilliant resource

Zraly is the master of wine education for energetically bringing to light, simplifying and making deliciously understandable even the most complex aspects of winedom. So I was at first unsure why he created this anthology of other people's words on the subject. What I found was the holy grail and foundation material that has been the basis for wine educators, wine writers and winemakers now and for the past 40 years. Debunking wine myths with facts and studies, enhancing traditions with rich readable reasoning, this succinct body of works is one of the great reference books of our time.

A LITERARY CONFECTION!

In the wine book genre we have so many serious and ponderous books, so much reference and finely organized information on grape varieties, regions, vintages etc., it just becomes exhausting at times. Do publishers not realize that some times we just want to read about wine for pleasure?

The irony is that most wine writers have written some very pleasureable pieces, but it takes an insightful, well read colleague like Kevin Zraly to gather together all these delightful tidbits. Working in the tradition of the great wine writers whom mentored Kevin, he was able to emulate the classic wine pleasure book, THE FIRESIDE BOOK OF WINE by our mutual friend, Alex Bespaloff< RIP. He gathered the best from the best, with his great personal presence in the wine biz, and the universal love and respect he enjoys from his colleagues, Kevin is perhaps the only living author who could assemble this delicious assortment of wine literary candy.
Worth twice the price and with Amazon selling for half the price it is worth 10 times what you will pay for this book!

`The Ultimate Wine Companion' is a handsome book with sturdy cream coloured pages. It gives you readings about wine and an education. There are many excerpts by wine authorities, something is written about each one as their excerpt begins. There are tales of excess...spending $25,000 for a week of wine tasting and food and the real story of California wining the wine tasting in France.

Sections include thoughts on wine, tasting wine, wine and food, making wine and the different regions of the old world and the new world. There is a history of each area, information how the wine is produced and what the finished product is like. Examples of labels are shown, information about the vineyards and vintages.
The appendices give classifications, best vintages, a glossary with pronunciations, the contributor biographies and an index.
This would give anyone the information they need to become an oenologist, or enough information to be someone who knows what to expect and look for when they purchase wine.

CD is great, book not so much

Like all the other Guitar Play Along series from Hal Leonard this contains a songbook and a CD that has tracks with and without guitar. The CD is the strength of this product. The production and clarity of instruments is fantastic, so it is a joy to play along with these definitive Police tracks. Unfortunately the songbook is a half baked effort at best. The songs tablature is sparse, which there simply is no reason for since the same publisher has other Police songbooks containing more accurate tablature. For instance there is no solo on "Message in a Bottle" and "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" has no accents on the verse section. There are no fills on any of the songs. Yet it is standard for the Guitar Play Along series to have those sections included. 2 1/2 stars for the CD, 1/2 star for the book.

I just found this book at a local music store. If I'd discovered it on Amazon, I would have bought it there. It is written with real music scores and bass (guitar) TAB underneath. Extremely logical and thorough, beginning with basic notes and runs, ending with encyclopedia of scales. Very very well written and logical. Loaded with information - I will be able to continue with Jazz studies in "The Evolving Bassist" after I learn this book ! Much more information, methodically presented than other method books I looked at.

Spiritual Abuse

Spiritual abuse should be a term familiar to anyone who has spent any significant time within a church organization. It starts with manipulation, extends to intimidation, and can end in death in cult situations such as Jonestown. Charismatic leaders and those in positions of power can wield amazing influence over individual lives (good and bad). This author does an excellent job researching her topic by having conducted extensive interviews and surveys among people who have experienced spiritual abuse. One might say these people are just bitter and have an axe to grind. But there's something deeper, a common thread. That common thread extends to men and women persecuted throughout history for their beliefs. Just as the Pharisees were unwilling to step aside for a greater Teacher, and One claiming to be the Messiah, many leaders of today's institutions similarly cling to their power base regardless of rational opposition. Orlowski takes the common experience a step further - recovery. Most people are not equipped to deal with unresolvable conflict ("because I said so") and leave churches frustrated, angry, and grieved. Barna released a new survey on the extent of this exodus. "... a large majority of the nation's unchurched population is drawn from the sector comprised of people who consider themselves to be Christian." "... nearly four out of every ten non-churchgoing Americans (37%) said they avoid churches because of negative past experiences in churches or with church people." People are talking and Orlowski combines their stories with a process for recovery and reintegration into healthy church organizations - an important perspective for clergy and laity alike.

This book is a result of extensive doctoral research on the topic of religious abuse and recovery as identified as originating from Evangelical, Pentecostal or Charismatic churches (EPC). The primary focus of the book is on how Christian believers most effectively discover authentic healing after being spiritually abused by those in church leadership. Through the related experiences of those abused, a challenge is put forth to clergy to both understand the nature of spiritual abuse and how they may best act as effective change agents rather than continuing to contribute to the problem. The research included an extensive questionnaire resulting in the completion of 110 individual surveys coming primarily from Canada and the United States. A strict and careful criterion was used to identify those most appropriate participants for the study.

A review of the primary Christian literature is provided with a discussion of the complex nature of the subject. Reasons for and results of religious abuse are examined and discussed. Various definitions of spiritual or religious abuse are considered. The relational nature of this form of abuse is examined and the individual unique and complex nature of recovery is explored. The healing role of community and importance of good theology is reviewed. Considerable attention is given to the importance of egalitarian relationships and the importance and role of forgiveness without at the same time denying abuse. The inseparability of emotional and spiritual health is affirmed. The role of healthy decentralized relational leadership models is considered.

One full chapter focused specifically on how the Bible speaks into this topic. Four particular factors are identified as relevant to the topic: legalism, a faulty hermeneutic, the role of leadership and the place of spiritual and emotional injury are all examined in Scripture. A primary emphasis is placed on the place of authority as identified in both the Old and New Testament. A suitable leadership model is suggested. An examination of the results of the research and its implications are explored and discussed. The most effective means of recovery from religious or spiritual abuse are identified. Of the five most identified sources in the order of their effectiveness were: having a significant non-judgmental confidant and support from friends and family, reading relevant books, examination of various Scripture passages, insights derived from relevant blogs and support from small focused support groups. Prayer, journaling and music were also identified as being significant in the healing process. The rarity of finding relevant small support groups was identified as being rather significant. The antidote of sound theology and the importance of healthy relationships were offered as most important to finding authentic healing. Finally, further research projects and topics of interest were suggested.

I found this text theologically and academically refreshing and on most levels well-informed. The book involved a great deal of time, energy and carefully reasoned arguments on the part of the author. While the text was clearly an academic effort it provides the average reader with many insights and thoughtful suggestions. It offers helpful contributions to the broader audience than to the clergy to which it was originally intended. I applaud the author's efforts in confronting this form of abuse. One additional chapter might have significantly added to its gravitas. This chapter would have included considerations provided from both Family Systems and Attachment theory as seen through the grid of a Trinitarian Christian worldview. This would have helped round out a more holistic conceptualized picture of how people are abused and how they might best understand and experience recovery. That said, I will gladly recommend this book to those with interest on the topic of spiritual abuse and recovery.

Spiritual Abuse Recovery: Dynamic Research on Finding a Place of Wholeness

I found this book while seeking to understand a negative church experience. Orlowski's research and explanations helped immensely by not only providing answers to my questions, but helping with recovery. It was surprising to learn that those of us who have had this painful experience are in the company of a growing group of others. It is truly a real and growing problem in the church. Also helpful was learning that these experiences are not only wrong, they are abusive, but that there is hope to heal from them and move on. Orlowski also provides practical and valuable help in healing and returning to the church experience better equipped to find a more balanced and safer church environment. I highly recommend this book for excellent help in understanding and healing from this real and growing problem.
