A Must Read for Coaches Too

I'm a high school coach and absolutely loved this book. I've read lots of basketball books for players and coaches and this is among the best - succint advice that is easy to understand. The book's format is ideal as the mini chapters make for easy reading and re-reading. I bought copies of this book for all of our returning players who are "into" basketball. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is committed to being a better basketball player or any coach who is committed to being a better coach.

This should be given to and read by every young basketball player as early as possible. Anyone who doesn't like this book has never coached young players. Very very helpful.

Really did change me life

I read this book the year it came out. I was a sophomore in HS and not very good at basketball. To play with my friends, who lived for bball, I checked this book out of my HS library. I ended up checking it out at least 5 more times! I read it over and over again and applied what I learned on our Thursday and Saturday night church pick-up games. Within a few months I was 5x better, really. I never turned into a great scorer because my love was really passing, defense, and rebounding, and this book covers those so precisely and simply that it always stuck with me. Now that I'm coaching youth league, I went to look for this book hoping it was still in print. Thank God it is, and that it's as great as ever!

Best Guidebook I've ever used

I don't know if this is how all european guidebooks are, but it totally blows American Guides out of the water. All color photos, great directions to the crag and lots of different/beautiful climbing areas that are of high quality but off the international radar. If you plan on climbing in the Catalunya area, besides Rodellar, Margalef and Siurana then you'll need this guide. I also suggest climbers to check out Sadernes, it's in the NE section of Catalunya and is perfect for Summer cragging. The guidebook is available at the Sadernes campground, walking distance from the crags. Enjoy Spain, I sure miss it!

Paul D. Houston has established himself as one of the leading spokespersons for American education through his extensive speaking engagements, published articles, and his regular appearances on national radio and television.�Formerly executive director of the American Association of School Administrators from 1994 to 2008, Houston�has served as�a teacher and building administrator in North Carolina and New Jersey. Robert W. Cole is proprietor and founder of Edu-Data, a firm specializing in writing, research, and publication services. He was a member of the staff of Phi Delta Kappan magazine for 14 years: assistant editor 1974-1976, managing editor 1976-1980, and editor-in-chief 1981-88. During his tenure as editor-in-chief, the Kappan earned more than 40 Distinguished Achievement Awards from the Association of Educational Publishers, three of them for his editorials.

Since leaving the Kappan, Cole has served as founding vice president of the Schlechty Center for Leadership in School Reform (1990-1994). At CLSR he managed districtwide and communitywide school reform efforts and led the team that created the Kentucky Superintendents’ Leadership Institute. He formed the Bluegrass Leadership Network, in which superintendents worked together to use current leadership concepts to solve reform-oriented management and leadership problems.

As senior consultant to the National Reading Styles Institute (1994-2005), Cole served as editor and lead writer of the Power Reading Program. He and a team of writers and illustrators created a series of hundreds of graded short stories, short novels, and comic books from Primer through Grade 10. Those stories were then recorded by Cole and Marie Carbo; they are being used by schools all across the United States to teach struggling readers.

Cole has served as a book development editor for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), for Corwin Press, and for Writer’s Edge Press. He has been president of the Educational Press Association of America and member of the EdPress Board of Directors. He has presented workshops, master classes, and lectures at universities nationwide, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Indiana University, Xavier University, Boise State University, and the University of Southern Maine. He has served as a special consultant to college and university deans in working with faculties on writing for professional publication. Recently he began serving as managing editor and senior associate with the Center for Empowered Leadership.

Not So Out-of-the-box

Reading this book makes you realize that title is not enough to make a book "out-of the box." Only few of the articles compiled in the book offer some practical perspectives that would change your view of leadership slightly.

Excellent sequel to Jumper and Reflex

Even if you've never read Jumper or Reflex, or if you've only seen the movie version of Jumper (Special Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray], then I think you'll find this story quite enjoyable -- it stands well enough on its own, and explains important plot items from previous books. If you're a fan of the movie you might be confused about plot differences, particularly regarding one character's mother (she dies in one and lives in the other). The story is strong enough that even coming in cold to the series, it's a compelling page-turner. For fans of the series, this is simply a must-have book!

What's It About?
In Jumper, teenage Davy learned he can teleport. In Reflex, adult Davy is kidnapped - and his wife discovers she, too, can teleport. Now in Impulse their teenage daughter learns she, too, has developed the talent - which means an end to home schooling, which she hates, and a chance to get to know other kids at a real high school. But the enemies her parents made in the first two books, who seek to exploit their talents at any cost, are an ever-present fear for her family, so she must keep her secret. The nature of being a new kid in a dysfunctional high school (aren't they all?) makes this a challenge, of course.

What's it Like?
This book is not as intense as Reflex, but feels much closer in tone and pace to the original Jumper novel. There's a lot of exploration of what it's like to be a teenager (or the parent of one) who doesn't quite fit in, but has a secret she must keep in order to protect herself and those around her. There are delightful interactions between the parents, put there for those of us who grew up reading these characters and, like them, have kids of our own. There are painfully accurate interactions between parents and teenager, with the added drama of being able to end an argument at will, by simply teleporting away. The internal thoughts of the teenager and her interaction with peers seem a little more adult to me than is totally believable, but the character is easy to love and identify with (unlike some teenage girls in popular fiction). There's a romance, a bully, risk to friendship, and - eventually - to life and limb.

Conclusion
As in the other books in this series, the talents of our protagonists are compelling and drive the story - yet never become the sole focus. Instead, the interactions and relationships between the characters are the focus, with Jumping a powerful catalyst that forces the stakes to be raised.

A Teenage Superhero Who Never Thinks Of Herself As One

I'd read Jumper and loved it. The film adaptation was pretty good too. I enjoyed Reflex, the sequel, and the way Gould didn't just rinse and repeat, but actually 'jumped' the story and characters forward. But Impulse blew me away. Gould 'jumped' the characters yet again, but this time he added a new primary viewpoint protagonist, Cent, the teenage daughter of Davy and Millie from the earlier books. Not only that, he made Cent a complex, extremely likeable yet flawed character, and added a bunch of other equally complex and interesting characters like Joe, Jade, Tara and, hmm, more that I don't want to mention here for fear of spoilers.

And then he went and topped it all by 'jumping' his own storytelling forward to a whole new level. Impulse is basically a superhero origin story in which nobody ever uses the word superhero. Which is itself so refreshing, in an age when superheroes are coming out of the woodwork. And he does it in a way that is even more well developed, action-packed, and dramatically rewarding as the earlier books, but with this added bonus of a terrific new female superhero protagonist.

Cent's story is a terrific one, and Impulse is an awesome SF thriller. It's classified as a YA novel and it certainly qualifies as one, but it's YA in the same way that Heinlein's 'juveniles' were YA - that is to say, it uses the protagonist's age and innocence to great advantage, while leveraging a very exciting and entertaining superhero thriller.

I just hope Steven Gould keeps writing more Jumper novels! More Cent, and anyone else you want to throw in the mix. Pretty please!

Bit of a step back from the previous novels

Loved this entire series of books by Steven Gould. This latest book is a little more slow going than the others as it revolves more around a teenage girl's life rather than Davy and Millicent. While they still play an important part in the book, they are not the main characters. As with the other books in the series, this one unveils a new "trick" that the jumpers find out they can do which aids them in their fight. While this seems a bit cliched, it fits well into the story. Overall, the story takes a while to get going and grab you, and then when it finally does you're strapped in for a fun ride.

Edward G. Hinkelman is an international economist with more than 32 years experience as an importer and exporter. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone in the Supply Chain - Transportation arena....it is invaluable. We have gone as far as to work with the publisher to have the print versions 'branded' with our companies logo, so that we could offer them to clients as GWP (Gift With Purchase). Please note that the price is what I have seen the publisher 'World Trade Press' sell the PDF version for, however if users simply Google World Trade Press and goto there website...the price is only $70.00 USD not including shipping.

EXCELLENT Resource

By far, one of the most comprehensive reference guides for anyone involved in international trade and logistics. I've had this book continuously throughout my career and find myself using it daily. When college students ask me questions about my job, I don't hesitate to refer them to this book.

Now that I'm a "Kindler", it would be nice to have this book available in that format.

An excellent choice

I found this book to be a very interesting read, particularly as we move through the 100 year anniversaries of some of the battles mentioned. The binding of my copy is excellent, the print is dark and clear. The subject matter is a discussion of actions personally commanded by the author in the format of battle reports with lessons learned. This book was written to be studied by future generations of infantry commanders and provides insight into the mind of the man himself. All in all a very splendid purchase.

Don't by this one in particular.

I'm not sure about this one, but a lot of "infantry Attacks" are just reprints of the hastily translated version with parts missing and sections cut that might embarrass the Allies, printed in 1944.
"Attacks" published by Athena press went back and translated the original book and isn't missing any maps or drawings, it is also a lot better laid out.
It is called 'Attacks' and not 'Infantry Attacks' and is also available on Amazon.

But review wise on 'Attacks' that i am reading right now, Five Starts and a half. Rommel inspires me and it is a great read.

Fascinating Alternative View of War, and World War One

Most people have heard of Erwin Rommel, at least in passing. But most people probably associate his name with only two events: World War Two tank battles in North Africa, and Rommel’s forced suicide by Hitler because of his ancillary association with Stauffenberg’s attempt to assassinate Hitler. And most people probably have a general sense that Rommel was not so bad a guy, relative to the Nazi regime as a whole (as low a bar as that may be). This book contradicts none of that, but provides a broader sense both of who Rommel was, and also provides a different perspective on World War One than we commonly have.

Infantry Attacks is basically a war travelogue. It is an autobiography not of war anguish, but of war practice. Informally written, it features Rommel leading small units, usually involving fast action against other small units. We typically associate World War One with Western Front trench warfare, and although Rommel did fight there and records it, much of the book is concerned with other fronts.

The first other front is the Carpathian border between Rumania and Hungary. (Well, what was then the border, before Transylvania was taken by the victorious Allies from Hungary, of which Transylvania had been a part for more than a thousand years, and given to the Rumanians to reward them for finally entering the war in 1916, when they figured out who was winning the war. Then the Rumanians also switched sides to gain advantage in World War Two.). The second is mountain warfare on the Austrian/Italian front, including the Battle of Caporetto, where Rommel won the Pour le Mérite, Germany’s highest military honor (informally called the Blue Max. and jarringly formally named in French, for historical reasons).

The book is written primarily as an instructional manual, drawing lessons from the detailed small unit actions Rommel describes. In passing, it also burnishes Rommel’s reputation (which grew in interwar Germany in part due to this book), even though Rommel not infrequently criticizes his own performance. Finally, the book serves as a platform for Rommel’s thoughts on what constitutes an honorable German soldier, which are pretty much as you’d expect for the time and place.

What strikes the modern reader most about the book is that it has a very different view of World War One fighting than we are used to. Most of the time, we think of World War One as unrelieved horror to no point, led by clueless generals and political leaders, featuring such low points as endless static trench fighting, Verdun, poison gas, and Gallipoli. Rommel enjoyed war, and he was good at it, and it shows continuously in the book. He frequently mentions how “exciting” a particular fight is, often in reference to “grenade duels.” He doesn’t spend any time at all navel gazing or reflecting on what lessons about human nature are being taught.

His men apparently worshipped him (although that is only obliquely evident in the book). One gets the impression, though, that was not due to his common touch, which is nowhere in evidence, but to his demi-godlike stature as a man who led from the front and was able to minimize his men’s casualties. As he says, “Winning the men’s confidence requires much of a commander. . . . . But once he has their confidence, his men will follow him through hell and high water.” Sounds easy, but reading the book you can see the things he did to really put that into practice successfully. (Someone would doubtless have written a book on applying the lessons of Rommel to business, if not for the unfortunate Nazi overtones that such a book would generate.)

We may think it’s odd, but we should remember that history and armies are full of examples of people who actually don’t mind, or actually positively enjoy, war, who nonetheless aren’t psychopaths or insane. It’s not just generals standing back from the battlefield, either—it’s just as much people like Rommel, engaged in “retail” war, who enjoy it.

Infantry Attacks can feel repetitive, particularly for a reader who doesn’t know the relevant geography or military tactics in detail. I’m sure for a military practitioner, each skirmish and battle in which Rommel describes his and his men’s part in detail, complete with Rommel’s hand drawn maps and sketches, teaches its own valuable lessons. But even for a causal or non-military leader, there is a lot of value in reading the book. It gives an invaluable flavor of the time and the war, very different from what normally receive, and is therefore very much worth reading.

Spelling's sTORI ~ a tool to make you appreciate that you don't live in a zoo & relocate every few months

Here's the thing. If you "like" Tori, or just like being voyeuristic and watching her life unfold, you will like this book -- even though it did not deliver nearly as well as her first few books did. As always, the cover is gorgeous, as are the pictures inside. They are fun to look at and feel like you get a little "peek" into her life (or, the peek she chooses to share). If you aren't a fan of Tori, don't bother with this book. I don't understand people who buy books and then rip them all to shreds. Surely, if you feel that way, you aren't really a Tori "fan." For me, she's a fascinating woman, who on one hand is just like the rest of us when it comes to her kids, and on the other, is this enigma you can't look away from. I admire her moxie and genius-ness when it comes to running her business and brand. Despite her inability to stop spending and making poor real estate decisions (which she goes into details about in this book), she is actually a smart lady. She plays dumb sometimes. She's not.

That said, while reading this book, I physically felt sick to my stomach with the real estate decisions she made, the money she lost hand over fist, and the debacle she found herself in with her home. She is much more of a risk taker than I am, and I physically wanted to shake her and tell her that a new house isn't going to make her happy. She's looking in the wrong places for the right things we all want in our lives. And I think all of this became evident in the wake of the news that broke after this book was published, around the instability of her marriage.

But, at the end of the day, her books are meant to be fun and funny, light reading, a little juicy and revealing (this wasn't as much on that side, but you still feel like you're hearing "insider" secrets), and relatable--especially for mothers and women.

So, was this a ground breaking book? No. Was it good? Yeah, it was all right. It was exactly what it promises to be: a quick bubblegum read that takes you along a small part of the journey Tori and her family have taken.

Now, what I'm really excited about is the book that I hope comes out next! And I hope she can reach a little deeper for that one, and be as truthful as possible. Because at the end of the day, that's why we read Tori's books time and again. Because we feel like we "get" her and "know" her on some level, and we're rooting for her to come out okay in the end.

LIVING IN THE CAMERA'S EYE

Tori Spelling is the kind of celebrity whose well-known life story is regularly documented in the tabloids. She has contributed to this notoriety by producing and starring in reality shows that peek behind closed doors, and while some of what is revealed is embellished and semi-scripted, there are some well-known indisputable facts.

Stories Tori tells on herself in her various memoirs give us a little bit more to chew on. Spelling It Like It Is begins with one of those funny events that seem to come often in Tori’s life. Almost throwing up at a public event, and suddenly realizing why. Yes, she was pregnant again, a third time.

Before this story is over, there will be still another (unexpected) pregnancy, less than a year after the third one…and that event became a life-threatening story that would keep Tori hospitalized for months…and then afterwards, there would be more complications.

Many believe that Tori is a “poor little rich girl,” since her daddy was Aaron Spelling. But hang on…she inherited a paltry amount of his billions after his death, and there were tales of her mother’s wealthy, mega-rich life in her palace while Tori struggled.

But…only partially true. Yes, her inheritance was insubstantial by her standards, but Tori has made lots of money over the years. She admits in this book that her poor financial choices have contributed to their current money issues (as of the publication of this tome). Moving house frequently, always in quest of the perfect home, but never quite giving up the tendency to “live large,” Tori shares that even when she is trying to downsize, she manages to spend compulsively.

One kernel of truth emerges, however. Tori is a hard worker, and some of her difficulties seem to motivate her to work even more. As this story ends, the family had moved once again, from a large rental behind gates to a smaller home in a less expensive neighborhood. Losing money on one of her house sales led to renting as a way of finding a home.

What will happen to Tori next? This book was published three years ago, and since then, the celebrity mill continues to spew out stories. Another reality show happened after these pages ended…Will there be another? An intriguing and engaging story that kept me reading, I gave this one 4.5 stars.

Not for me

I don't think I like her as a person, by which I am referring to the alchemy of combining personality types rather than some lofty moral judgement. So I stopped reading after a couple chapters. But, for a celebrity autobiography, it was fine: chatty, easy to read, lots of conversation and good enough writing. So I'm not criticizing; it simply wasn't my cup of tea.

About the Author
Dan Abnett lives and works in Maldstone, Kent. Well known for his comics work, he has written everything from Mr Men to the X-Men in the last decade, and currently scripts Legion of Superheroes and Majestic for DC Comics. His work for the Black Library includes the popular strips Lone Wolves and Darkblade, the best-selling Gaunt's Ghosts novels, and the acclaimed Inquisitor Eisenhorn trilogy.

Great Stories, Poor Binding and Construction

This is a collection of two Dan Abnett comic stories set in the WH40K universe. "Lone Wolves" tells the story of an Imperial Guard unit's survival on a planet infested with Tyranids, with a lot of help from the Space Wolves. "Inquisitor Ascendant" reminds people that instincts aren't always the safest or most reliable gauge of a person. Abnett's writing is crisp, to the point, and power packed. I found myself eagerly turning the pages just to see what happens next.

Unfortunately, turning those pages to get to that story and dialog is a real problem. Most graphic novels are much larger than this one, with the comic panels set far off of the binding gutter so that the artwork and the dialog can be easily seen and read, respectively. This one is smaller than most graphic novels, and the comic panels bleed into the binding gutter. I found myself struggling with the binding to read all the story for a particular scene. When the comic panels didn't bleed into the gutter, they were so small that it became somewhat laborious to track the transitions between panels. Furthermore, the binding was very tight on my copy, and it has split a bit after two readings. A larger format like a traditional graphic novel and better page layout would have made more sense and would have made for a better reading experience.

Abnett's writing rocks, and he "gets" the WH40K universe, weaving it's odd mashing of English and Latin-esque terminology easily into his stories. His writing pulls you in, if only because his characters actually use the science fiction technology rather than delving into long-winded narratives about it. Too bad the physical construction of the book made for difficult reading at times.

Fast paced and exciting (Typical Abnett)

By combining the bold and intense writing style of Dan Abnett with the detailed drawings of the Warhammer artists, a remarkable product is created. In this book, two separate stories are presented, each with very Abnettesque characters and settings. The first is about an Imperial Guardsman unit that calls to mind Gaunt's Ghosts, with desperate fighting and overwhelming odds on a cold and desolate planet. The second set tells of a rising Inquisitor and his investigation and extermination of Chaotic forces and has many obvious similarities to the Eisenhorn novels. Personally I liked both sets of stories, but the Space Wolves set has the better and more detailed art work, while the Inquisitor Ascendent set has the more in depth and captivating story line. Both sets of short comics (that came out in Warhammer monthly magazine and are progressive series) are fun and engrossing. The progressivness is obvious mostly in the gradual increase in detail of the drawings from the older to the more recent of the episodes.

The only complaint I can make about this edition is that not enough space was left for margins between the pages, forcing a choice between creasing and ruining the book binding or not quite being able to read some of the writing or see all of some pictures. Overall this didn't really create too much of a problem, but it is somewhat annoying.

ACTION FROM THE MASTER, DAN ABNETT!

Imperial Gothic collects several of Dan Abnett's Warhammer 40,000 comic strips from the pages of Warhammer Monthly and packs them into this eagerly anticipated, 208 page digest-sized graphic novel with tales of the near mythical Space Wolves as well as the Inquisitor Ascendant. In the grueling opening story, a group of Imperial Guards stationed on the desolate, frozen world of Shadrac face a desperate battle against overwhelming hordes of alien Tyranid. Just as it seems they are about to be overrun they are miraculously saved by the legendary Space Wolves. After being saved by the elite force on several occasions the guardsmen see the Wolves in trouble. As they prepare to flee, their commander turns them about and they return the favor by rescuing the Wolves and are made Bloodgeld, blood brothers essentially as they learn the ways of these unique soldiers and prepare for one final standoff against the Tyranid...to the death!

In the Inquisitor Ascendant, the Lord Inquisitor Defay has detected the taint of chaos on the world of Nicodemus. Along with his pupil Gravier, DeFay investigates the cause of this outbreak on the ancient world and confronts Cardinal Sarthos who constantly hinders his investigation. The cardinal is outraged when DeFay seeks to search the keep of one of the most prominent families but his outrage turns to terror when it's discovered that they are sheltering and hiding the servants of chaos and soon unleash a powerful chaos demon on DeFay and his apprentice.

Imperial Gothic reads as good as any of Abnett's Warhammer novels with bigger than life heroes and the vilest hosts of chaos to be found anywhere. The first story had the feel of Starship Troopers although it was decidedly more grim and desperate. The Space Wolves are truly one of the most unique and interesting forces in the empire. Abnett's work is complemented by the fantastic art of Karl Richardson and Simon Coleby. One of the very best Warhammer 40,000 graphic novels yet!
