Extraordinary

Charles Jackson crafted an extraordinary debut novel, headlong and horrifying, in THE LOST WEEKEND. Its 248 pages of text recount five days in the drinking life of a thirtyish upper-middle-class New Yorker, Don Birnam, in 1936. Birnam adroitly shucks off his brother and girlfriend in favor of holing up alone and drinking, accompanied by his sizeable library of recorded classics. When he is forced to go outside to look for more money and more booze, he falls down a staircase and winds up in the hospital, which only partially dries him out before sending him home. The sequence of Don's looking for a pawnshop, not realizing it is Yom Kippur when most of the Second Avenue pawnshops are closed, is one of the most graphic in the book. Told almost entirely in interior monologue, it creates sympathy for a character who is hitting new lows in his life yet dealing with the tragedy not only with alarm and self-pity but also with humor and a strange kind of bravery.
THE LOST WEEKEND was published in 1944, more than fifteen years before the movie THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES was made and helped solidify the shift in medicine and psychology to a view of alcoholism as disease rather than moral weakness. In this, the book is well ahead of its time. Don seems to suffer from an ongoing inferiority complex paradoxically coupled with feelings of superiority. His father left the family when he was a little boy. He was groomed for success and given the European "grand tour" common to the elite of his generation, yet never fulfilled his promise. In college, Don develops a gay "crush" on an upperclassman in his fraternity, writes a passionate letter to him, is found out and is kicked out. (The 1945 movie starring Ray Milland tamped down any mention of homosexuality in favor of "writer's block," but in 1946 Jackson dealt with the topic at greater length in his novel THE FALL OF VALOR.)
The prose style in this first-person narrative is highly developed and that alone qualifies THE LOST WEEKEND as a modern classic. Birnam couples childhood reveries with a desperate search for the factors that led him into alcoholism; when he is lusting for a drink the interior monologue seems to pick up speed, much as a movie would go into an accelerated montage to heighten tension. But the book conveys nuance and insight to a much greater degree than even the popular movie can. Don's psychological introspection is mixed with the kind of horrors that an advanced alcoholic can expect to experience: hallucinations, delirium tremens, and the like. THE LOST WEEKEND is a highly recommended book, all the more so because actual alcoholic writers like Sinclair Lewis and Kingsley Amis have praised it for its realism. The Introduction by Blake Bailey is well worth reading before or after the main text and will not spoil the plot. In fact, Bailey in the Spring of 2013 gave us a wonderful biography of Jackson, Farther and Wilder: The Lost Weekends and Literary Dreams of Charles Jackson.

Powerful and Unforgettable

Just finished "The Lost Weekend" (1944), by Charles Jackson, set in 1936 in New York City.
A more harrowing and shocking journey one could hardly desire, and a more important piece of forgotten
mid-century American literature might never be unearthed. Much more than the story of five days in the
tortured life of an alcoholic at bottom, and much more than the multi-award winning movie of the same name,
(made almost immediately after this runaway best-seller), the book demonstrates erudition, sophistication, and stylistic
powers far above most contemporary writing, then or now. Once you start reading you simply cannot stop:
for the narrative itself becomes as addicting and overwhelming to the reader as the alcohol is to the protagonist.

The Lost Weekend by Charles Jackson is a total masterpiece. It's such a shame he is not better known. A story about 5 days in the life of alcoholic Don Birnam as he lies, cheats, and steals to get his booze. Some really, really great scenes in this book, like when he attempts to steal a purse from a nightclub, or desperately walking the streets of New York City looking for an open pawn shop to sell his typewriter. But I don't want to ruin the story for you. An absolute must read!
