Amazing book on research methods

Of all the books I have used in research methods courses, this one is by far the best. It is written in a clear and engaging style, with plenty of excellent examples. The authors cover everything from the most basic (like the difference between an independent and dependent variable) to the most advanced techniques and strategies for designing a tight, valid experiment. This book was a joy to read and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in social science research methods.

Wonderful Primer for Intermediate Students

Kennedy's Revised Latin Primer is one of the best Latin primers of its size and scope I have seen to date. The classical Latin language is described in all its essential details, with some reference to pre-classical Latin that the student might encounter in his readings. The history, phonology, morphology, syntax and prosody are covered successively as is usual in primers. All the essential facts, both the regularities and the irregularities, of the language are presented in clear, easy-to-read manner, with paradigms well set-out in tables and lists.
I should consider this book to be one of the classic Latin primers, well known and used commonly in schools. Note, though, that this book is not an introductory textbook for learning Latin; it is rather a primer for the purposes of revising and getting a deeper understanding of what is already learnt, as well as for acquiring further instruction on matters of syntax, etc., once the basics are known. It is one of the best primers available for intermediate students, and would serve admirably as a reference grammar for beginning students as well. I would recommend it as a supplement to any introductory textbook, and as a guide to those progressing further.

the second part of the book covers latin syntax, sentence constructions, and all the noun declensions.
highly recommended.

Like others have said this is a real disappointment. To general, entire procedures are missing, pictures are not particularly well labeled, etc. I ended up getting a factory service manual online and while its a big book it satisfies my needs much better. Do not buy this book.

Haynes copped out...

I've always gone with Haynes manuals in the past. I preferred the way they were written and illustrated to Chilton. That said, I was very disappointed in this manual when I began looking into the various jobs I was considering performing on my Tacoma. My first impression, in agreement with other reviews, was that this manual tries to cover too many different models. Because of this, some of the procedures become muddled and hard to follow for a specific vehicle. However, my biggest complaint is that the author/publisher makes decisions for us about what may or may not be cost effective/beyond our skill level and provides no information on operations deemed thus. This is absolutely unacceptable and it kinda makes me angry. Specifically, I wanted procedures for removing the differentials from my axle housings, particularly the front, as the back seems pretty straight forward. It's one of the reasons i bought the manual. Instead, I got nothing. I'm wondering if tearing down and rebuilding an entire engine isn't too difficult for the DIYer, what's so frikkin' tough about changing ring and pinions, or carrier bearings, or inspecting your ring and pinions for chips or cracks.

Come on, Haynes, give us the procedures and let us decide if the tooling is too expensive or the skills are beyond us. Don't make that decision for us. Based on a COMPLETE tear down and rebuild? I think not.

At best: decent, at worst: decently helpful

Good manual but leaves a lot to be desired. I have the FSM for the 2001 Tacoma, and way, way better than this but it was also $500 for volumes 1 & 2. So that's why I'm going four instead of 3 stars. It is decent, however, they are too general with the different models and trims. It will show a pic of a 4Runner then later in the sequence a taco, then a t100.
The General maintainence is very good and the basics too. In depth, it leaves a lot more vague information that can have you guessing. It gives great info on how to change a timing belt, but crummy info on, say how to remove a grill or replace light bulbs and head lamps.

Bottom line: if you don't have or can't borrow or buy a $500+ FSM, yeah it is at best and worst, a decent buy. It has its credits and deficiencies but definitely better than nothing.

A work of monumental importance

This is a difficult book to digest for faithful Roman Catholics like myself. It is the story of a wonderful priest who loved the poor and wanted the church to improve the quality of life for Catholics. Pope John Paul the First was a man who would not seek to impose christian solutions on non-Christians; he was someone who was sensitive to social problems and open to dialogue; with a commitment to the search for unity; a good pastor, a good shepherd in the way that Jesus was; a man who sincerely believed that the church should not be out of date but be a relevant, nurturing factor in the lives of Catholics worldwide.
The press called him the "Smiling Pope." However, in reality Albino Luciani who wished to be called Pope John Paul the First and became the first double name in the history of the papacy was a man of enormous faith. What a shame his 33 days as pope in 1978 was the shortest stint since Pope Medici Leo XI in 1605 who only served 17 days. In all likelihood, he had the inner strength and intelligence to be the greatest pope in the history of the Vatican.
To this end, "In God's Name: An Investigation into the Murder of Pope John Paul I," by highly regarded journalist David A.Yallop is a work of monumental research and importance. The author dares to point a finger at the financial corruption within the Vatican. He names names...Michele Sindona, Roberto Calvi, Lucio Gelli, Cardinal John Patrick Cody of Chicago and Bishop Paul Casimir Marcinkus in Vatican City all coducted illegal activities. And Albino Luciani was determined to put an end to it.
This well-written book is difficult to put down. Quite naturally it is officially condemned by the oligarchy in the Vatican. However, I think it is important for all interested in the pursuit of truth to read this compelling book and drawn one's own conclusion. The evidence is hard to ignore. The conclusion is based on facts. It is truly hard to imagine but I am know convinced that Pope John Paul the First was murdered because he dared to promote positive change and rid the Vatican of corrupt banking practices. Highly recommended.

God's Justice and Man's Transformation

Jonathan Sacks is a master teacher and provides deep insights into our current state of identity and our search for meaning as humans.

Religious hate and violence are discussed and Sacks says it is the inner violence that if expressed has the power to destroy a society. We need to let go of hate - first in the battlefield of our mind. To be cured of potential violence toward others, we must imagine ourselves as the Other and search for the trace of God in the face of the Other. To violence, God is saying: Not in My Name.

Genesis is the foundational book of Abrahamic monotheism and this book uses many examples from Genesis, from the history of the Jewish people, and from the Hebrew Bible. Sacks helps us to see deeper meanings in the stories and counter-stories. The stories contain themes of sibling rivalry, role reversal, transformation, and reconciliation.

In the last chapter, Sacks has specific answers to address religious hate and violence. Here is one: we must strive to honor God's name by honoring his image - humankind.

Sacks discusses our inner struggle within the soul, our identity, our search for a life with meaning, and the tension between love and justice. This discussion is done under the backdrop of religion, history, sociology, philosophy, and psychological insight into relationships including sibling rivalry, rejection, victimhood, scapegoat, and reconciliation.

Sacks is an excellent communicator of ideas (religious and secular). This book is recommended.

No certain proof, but revealing.

This book gives a terrible tarnished picture of the Vatican, even if the author is wrong and there was no murder or active murder (they could have let Pope John Paul I die, by not administering him his medicine).
A Vatican controlled by a bunch of corrupt, merciless, avid for power, 'holy' cardinals (Villot, Cody, Marcinkus, Baggio), implicated in a web of depraved banking, masonic and Mafia figures like Calvi, Gelli and Sindona. (I recommend for the 'banking' part also the book by Richard Hammer 'The Vatican Connection').
What is also intriguing, or should I say 'demonic', is the fact that the next pope didn't remove anybody entangled in these murky affairs from his office.
The author gives also very plausible hints why, besides personal career interests, there were moral (the issue of birth control, for instance) and financial (money laundering to help friendly unions or parties) motives.
A devastating book. Not to be missed.

Josef “Sepp” Allerberger was the second most successful sniper of the German Wehrmacht and one of the few private soldiers to be honored with the award of the Knight’s Cross. An Austrian conscript, after qualifying as a machine gunner he was drafted to the southern sector of the Russian Front in July 1942. Wounded at Voroshilovsk, he experimented with a Russian sniper-rifle while convalescing and so impressed his superiors with his proficiency that he was returned to the front on his regiment’s only sniper specialist. In this sometimes harrowing memoir, Allerberger provides an excellent introduction to the commitment in field craft, discipline and routine required of the sniper, a man apart. There was no place for chivalry on the Russian Front. Away from the film cameras, no prisoner survived long after surrendering. Russian snipers had used the illegal explosive bullet since 1941, and Hitler eventually authorized its issue in 1944. The result was a battlefield of horror. Allerberger was a cold-blooded killer, but few will find a place in their hearts for the soldiers of the Red Army against whom he fought.

Unique perspective, intense and satisfying stories of WWII German Marksman Sepp Allerberger

As an avid WWII reader, I’m always looking for the next good book I can sink my brain-teeth into. For the past little while I’ve been “catching up” on accounts of the Eastern Front (I use to read only Western/Southern Europe accounts) and then almost exclusively from the Landsers point of view. Some of the best first person perspective reads I have experienced are Guy Sajers’ “Forgotten Soldier” and several of the Stackpole publishers books such as “Tigers in the Mud” and the Panzer Aces series… basically as of late I like a clean read of what-was-happening in the field as opposed to statistics of “how many” and precise dates (I’m pretty sure I’ve covered those statistical books a few hundred times already).

So on the list of good reads, I put this one at 4.5 stars. The reason not 5 was that it is a thin book, so it reads pretty quickly, and I believe Sepp didn’t write it himself, instead he was interviewed for his story and someone else wrote it up for him so some interpretation comes through. Still, this was the first book I have read about any Sniper/Marksman activity during WWII and I found the perspective refreshing, even if the subject matter is rather intense. To that point, the descriptions of atrocities that Sepp observed are some of the more disturbing that I have read in many books, and I understand that they were uniquely so in that in my excitement to share what I was reading with a friend I found that I would fall way short when trying to describe them and must have appeared a bit kookie in finding any joy from such abominable subject matter. So with a fair warning for not reading this on a full stomach I give this a two “thumbs up”!

"Sniper on the Eastern Front" puts the horrors of the Russian Front on a personal level

"Sniper on the Eastern Front" confirms all the horror stories that one has read and heard about the war on the Russian Front in World War II. It's an enlightening memoir and chronicle of how a young German soldier became a one of the most highly decorated Wehrmacht snipers fighting the Russians and all the ordeals he and his comrades went through. It provides insights on tactics and skills developed by both sides in the fighting as well as the terrible ordeals German soldiers went through. It does provide convincing anecdotes on how barbaric the Soviet soldiers were toward their enemies, civilian and military, On the other hand it could be pointed that The main criticism is that the book is a little light on the ordeals that the German army put the Russians through in the course of invading the Motherland. It provides a weak justification for a "preemptive" war against a Communist dictatorship, although Stalin would have certainly liked to take out Nazi Germany and the West as a whole at some point--although it is highly improbably that it was planned for later in 1941 as the book asserts. Another revelation provided by the veteran sniper is the extent to which German troops on the Eastern Front used and appeared dependent on an early methamphetamine drug developed by Nazi scientists to keep their armies going and alert in face of the exhaustion and continued stress of battling the dogged Russian army.

Interesting, enlightening and horrific - an honest depiction of war

This is a stark, honest story of life during wartime. It does not glorify war or being a sniper in any way. The depiction of life on the Eastern front of the German/Russian conflict during WWII is brutal and not for those with a weak stomach. I think that everybody should read a book such as this at least once in their lifetime in order to help them to understand the horrors of war and why it should be avoided whenever possible. It is easy to for those away from the military to forget what war entails and books such as this are necessary reminders of why war should only be a last resort. The author does a great job of explaining the combination of luck, good fortune and skills that allowed him to survice in this role while others died. He details the cunning and cold calculation that makes for a successful sniper without glorifying it. He also does a good job of explaining the military culture of the time and how the view of the sniper evolved from being looked upon by military leadership as a dishonorable method or warfare to being seen by leadership as a necessity. It was interesting to learn that the sniper often saved the lives of his comrades byslowing down the enemy in pursuit of retreating troops and sometime stopping aggressive attacks by methodically picking off soldiers and forcing them to keep thier heads down. Ultimately, I found the book to be both horrific, shocking and interesting all at the same time.
