About the Author
Tom Connolly was born in Charleville, County Cork, in 1934, the eighth member of a family of thirteen. His father and grandfather were both policemen. He joined the Garda Siochana in 1955, and retired in 1994, having risen to the rank of Detective Superintendent. He has been commended on many occasions for his impartiality and conscientiousness in conducting investigations, and was awarded the Gold Scott Medal for valour in 1975. Tom won senior county football championships with Clonakilty and with Round Towers, Kildare, and played senior inter-county football with both Cork and Kildare for a number of years. Tom's wife Maureen died in 2008. He has two sons, both Gardai, and a daughter. He lives in Naas, County Kildare.

Love at any age

Based on Ms Bliss' short story “The Power of Words” in her mini-anthology “Opposites Attract” this is the full length drama of Joy and Alice. It is also Alice's coming of age story. Alice is a 51 yr old lawyer who has gone to spend a holiday in her law partner, Miranda's, vacation home in Portugal. While there Miranda's 29 yr old daughter arrives to spend a few days in the sun before starting a new job. Over the course of these days Joy has dragged Alice out of her ultra conservative, prim and proper life. Joy has rocked her world to the core. She not only sleeps with the nubile young creature, she has fallen in love. Can their love survive the cold reality of daily life back in the city? How will Alice face Miranda knowing she is sleeping with her daughter? Are they doomed before they even begin? Guess you will have to see for yourself.

This book is told from Alice's POV. This straight laced divorcee has little in her life but work. She limits her alcohol to 2 glasses (even while on vacation), works out 45 minutes a day on her treadmill while working, and exists but doesn't really live. Joy on the other hand is a free spirit, she lives life to the fullest and as such is considered to be immature and spoiled by Alice until she spends more time with her. Joy goes topless by the pool, swims naked in the sea, loves her phone, has friends, drinks to excess but really lives. Her character undergoes a lot of change as well. She goes from a wild, spoiled woman child to a loving, giving, ready to settle down with one person partner.

I loved how Alice spends so much time in her head. There is a lot of introspective inner talk. She starts out ultra refined reflecting ton how disrespectful today's kids are. She questions herself, her reactions to Joy and her changing feelings. She worries about everything and questions herself, her new relationship, her friends reactions and her right to stay in the closet. It is really interesting to watch her character grow and open up. Her insecurities make her so much more lovable and human. Combined with Joy's unbridled energy and passion they are quite a couple with a lot to teach each other.

The love scenes were hot as per usual Ms Bliss but different from her normal. Alice experiences them in a reflective, through her eyes style, “I feel this” or “I can't believe she is touching me there” and “Oh that is so good” sort of way. I found I really enjoyed experiencing a sex scene this way and I thought it was even hotter, making me feel more like a voyeur.

Writing - Great, Story - Okay.

A stiff, unemotional British woman, Alice, is forced to take a two-week vacation by her partner Miranda, because she hasn’t had a vacation in years. Her partner’s twenty-nine year old daughter barges in on her vacation, but since it is Miranda’s family vacation home, she can’t really object. What starts out as an invasive awkward vacation turns into something Alice didn’t expect, at all.

This story was well-written, just like all of Bliss’s books. It builds you up then lets your hopes fall, as Alice can’t decide what she wants or what she deserves. There is plenty of tension to keep you flipping pages, hoping for the best.

To me, this wasn’t one of Bliss’s better books. There wasn’t as much depth to the characters as in her other books and the story was quite predictable. It wasn’t horrible, not at all, but not the best either. It just didn’t feel real to me. I’m not a huge fan of stories written in first person, but if they’re done well, I hardly even notice. This one, I noticed. But that is just me and my preferences, nothing to do with the book itself.

Seasons of Love is smooth flowing love story that depicts the ins and outs of a somewhat unusual May to December relationship. It is a coming out story as well with all the attendant anxieties that that brings. From the onset I was captured by the authenticity of all the characters. Alice and Joy’s love develops quickly, reminiscent of the classic lesbian clich� but without the U-Haul. The question as to whether this is a vacation fling or something more is only one of the question that need to be answered. The intimate and erotic scenes are done with Harpers usual skill and attention to detail. If you are a fan of Harpers or new to her stories you won’t be disappointed with this novel.

Roller-coaster existentialism, and fun, too!

"Watt" is the hilarious story of an itinerant character who walks one day from a train station, like a homing pigeon, straight to the home of a man whom he will serve. He enters the kitchen to take his spot, whereupon the present kitchen worker issues a rambling monologue of stunning length and baffling content, then leaves the household for Watt to stay behind. In the first few pages, we are already asking: Why did Watt just show up? Whose house is this? Who is this man in the kitchen already? Why is he delivering this major dissertation? What does it all mean?
The rest of the book concerns Watt's service to the master of the house, some of it conventionally narrated, much of it digressive and odd. To explain this book, however, is to sound ridiculous. A certain number of things happen to Watt, he takes a certain number of actions, he engages in a certain number of conversations, and he ends the story in the book in a certain meaningful fashion. The entire story is told in Beckett's trademark effusive style, a rollicking, bizzare, but highly entertaining profusion.
The meaning of the book is also classic Beckett: Don't wait for Higher Meaning, because there is none. All his books portray absurd characters doing absurd things, waiting for life to reveal itself, but ultimately realizing that life reveals itself through the living. To answer the questions posed above, the book is compsed like a circle, just like life. At the same time, it's also completely meaningless, just like life. We go to some place, we stand in some position, we engage with some people, we commit some acts, we turn and commit other acts, and we engage with some other people. Somehow, among all this ballet, the world still turns, and we still live upon it. For all their foolish sounding, Beckett's books do indeed have a meaning, that life is just the living of it.
Beckett is a psychological master. His prose style will never be repeated. I'd call him the Babe Ruth or Michael Jordan of literature, a crude analogy, for which we should apologize, but it is one that we hope reflects the major impact of his work on the art, and his primacy among its literary practitioners.
Beckett's work is random by no means. It is carefully crafted, and has an internal rhythm all its own. If a reader is willing to take off their shoes and run through the squishy mud of Beckett's life-swamp, so to speak, it is a joy to read and great fun to reflect upon. "Watt" is a good example of his work, relatively short, and relatively simple, but still likely to provoke great consternation among any who are not used to Beckett's gushing and admirable style, but great enjoyment among those who take it on its own life-affirming terms.
Beckett is a great writer for those readers who seek a literary puzzle, a semantic challenge, and a story with a surreal whiff, which tells us how wonderful it is just to be alive, enjoying our time on earth. "Watt" is one of Beckett's more accessible and fun works.

Funny AND Avant-garde

This novel is SO funny! I know it's an avant-garde masterpiece and all, but it's also hilarious. I guess if we read it straight, we would have to conclude that the protagonist, Watt, is schizophrenic, along with the narrator also, probably. The characters are not realistic. Plot actions seem completely random and unmotivated. Watt's characteristic action is to consider every possibility in every situation, and every possible combination of possibilities. There's one part that had me laughing out loud. Watt is some kind of minor servant in a household, and his orders are to feed the leftovers to the dog. But there is no dog! So Watt dreams up all these far-fetched and absurd schemes for finding a dog to feed the leftovers to. I couldn't stop laughing, but my friends say I have a weird sense of humor.

It's so hard to get good help in a Beckett novel...

To a house in the country comes an enigmatic man named Watt to take the place of an outgoing servant in the household staff of a man equally enigmatic, Mr. Knott. From this commonplace beginning, Samuel Beckett weaves a most uncommon tale that can perhaps only be accurately described as...well, Beckettian.

Watt is of that distinctive tribe of shabby, decrepit, stumblebums who are regularly featured as "heroes" of Beckett's work. In the case of the present novel, Watt becomes obsessively preoccupied with the habits, duties, and peccadilloes of the other household staff and, in particular, of his erstwhile new employer, the aforementioned, Mr. Knott. Clever how Beckett has Watt--a cipher himself--trying to decipher another cipher, Mr. Knott. To Watt, his employer, who he eventually comes to dress and undress, remains an elusive albeit binding mystery. But then virtually everything presents itself as a mystery to Watt and becomes the subject of long, tortured, and mostly humorous super-logical speculations that seek to take every possible explanation into account for even the most mundane phenomenon--with invariably absurd results. What you have is the literary equivalent of the old proverb of the spider who asked the centipede how it manages to walk with all those legs--and the centipede trying to explain suddenly finds he can't take another step without falling. The same sort of paralysis grips Watt's efforts to understand Mr. Knott and, for that matter, the absurdity of life in general. It's an affliction very common to characters in Samuel Beckett's work--and probably one that strikes a sympathetic chord in the experience of his most appreciative readers.

Indeed, significant portions of *Watt* will likely try the patience of lesser fans comprised as these portions are of quasi-Biblical lists of absurd comprehensiveness, extended series of repetitions detailing, for instance, all the possible permutations a man might manage when shodding his feet with the customary footwear available to him each morning: a shoe, a boot, a sock, and a slipper. Like a lot of Beckett, these kinds of ridiculously exhaustive lists of minutiae gather a certain sort of power and poetry when read aloud, but they are nearly impossible to get through with any profit while reading silently on a crowded bus, let's say.

On the other hand, *Watt,* like *Mercier and Camier* is quite a bit more conventional than Beckett's later fiction; though, of course, "conventional" in regard to Beckett is a relative term. In this case, *Watt* features genuine dialogue, a range of character viewpoints, and, if not a plot in the ordinary sense, than a plot in the extraordinary sense.

Mordant, ribald, dark, and grotesque, not to mention slapstick, sometime Three Stooges-like funny, *Watt* may not be Beckett at his peak, but he's clearly on his way--and Beckett anywhere on the climb is head and shoulders above just about anyone else.

Capturing the true essence of the female form.

Naga is one of the greatest works of Sorayama yet. Your collection of fantasy art is not complete without this selection. His realism and techniques are unparalled; I kept waiting for the pictures to come to life! The only problem I had with the book is that many of the pictures contain images of bondage and violence, which I disagree with - the victims were in every case female - but if you can look past that, the book itself is truly a work of art.

In the realm of the senses, indeed!

Sorayama may very well be the most uncompromising and brilliant visual artist today. Those not familiar with Sorayama's artwork may not want to start here... but then again, maybe the best thing to do is to dive in and pray you survive. NAGA is the most sexually explicit and at the same time probably the best work Sorayama-sensei has produced -- it's like a museum of the ways the human form can be fantasized about, fetishized, transformed, mutated, animalized, and ultimately transcended. What's odd is that the most shocking images are so matter-of-fact and direct that prurience takes a backseat to the power of the vision and the technique. Sorayama's art is what photographs wished they look like: they're almost too realistic. But that is exactly the source of their beauty and their incredible hold over the viewer. "Genius" is too kind a description.

A Must-have for erotic & bondage art collectors

This is a MUST HAVE book for erotic or bondage artcollectors. Sorayama's work is simply amazing. His imagination andattention to detail are incredible.
There are many very explicitimages. Many pictures contain wild and creative bondage; others have unusual piercings displayed in unique ways. A lot of the piercings are in very intimate places. A few women hold whips.
Some of the other subjects include mermaids, women with snakes & other creatures, women in water, ponygirls and women urinating. Though some pictures contain metal work, there is less in this book than previous ones.
My only wish for this book is that the pictures were all contained to one page. In my opinion, much of the artwork was somewhat distorted by being spread across two pages.
