Outdated and Offensive

As a sexuality educator, I am always looking to refer clients, particularly teens, to good books about enhancing sexual relationships. Having read so many positive reviews about this book, I was distressed to see how incredibly offensive, heterosexist, misogynistic, and just generally dated it was.
For example, to refer to the rear entry position as "La Negresse," is beyond disgraceful. In addition, to make such statements as "To need some degree of violence in sex... is statistically pretty normal," to say that "Medicine is concerned about [bisexuals] because... they spread the HIV virus into the general sexual community," and to refer to lesbians as "simply women who have given up on men after a lifetime spent kissing frogs who failed to turn into princes," gives a very limited, inaccurate, and disrespectful view of sexuality as a whole.
The book also makes sweeping generalizations about people from various cultures, as well as sex workers ("prostitutes"), "transsexualists," who he incorrectly says are "mostly male," and as mentioned above, lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. He warns, "Don't take on a person with a major sex problem, such as... homosexuality." Heaven forbid a teen - or a person of any age who may be questioning her or his sexual orientation -- gets her or his hands on this book.
With so many negative messages bombarding our society about sexuality, can we not try to be less flippant and more positive and accepting -- or at the very least, tolerant?
When updating a book, one must focus not only on amending factual information -- which is not even done correctly in all cases here (i.e., AIDS is not a virus, it is the last stage of HIV disease; nothing is mentioned about transmission through breast milk, etc.) -- but also on our ever-changing, hopefully progressing, societies. This book is far from progress; it belongs in the middle ages.

An updated edition of a classic sex guide

As a forty-something year old guy, I'm just as interested in sex as much as the next guy (or woman), so naturally I do sometimes wander to the Relationships section at the local book emporium and check out the guides on lovemaking. Yes, there are many such books out there (Anne Hooper seems to have made a good career for herself with her own series of "how-to" guides!), but the late Alex Comfort's The New Joy of Sex is by far the best.
Updating his 1972 bestseller for the 1990s as a result of the AIDS crisis, Comfort supplements his always helpful advice from the 1970s edition with new sections in which he discusses safe sex, the importance of sharing and respecting a partner's needs or fantasies. Even better, Comfort uses language that is both informative and pleasing to the ear. He also avoids being overly clinical; knowing how most people talk about sex, he doesn't shy away from using colloquial [phrases] when referring to genitalia. Best of all, Comfort advises his audience that sex is something very human and essential to any meaningful relationship, so it should indeed be a source of joy.
Beautifully illustrated throughout with photos by Clare Park and drawings by John Raynes, The New Joy of Sex should be read at least once by any couple seeking to enhance their relationship.

The First And The Finest

If you object to the politicization of sex, to the sentimentalization of sex, or if you suspect that the cultivation of primal, glorious human sensuality has been kidnaped by ideologues masquerading as sex educators who seek to advance their own agenda, then you will find Alex Comfort's "Joy of Sex" a refreshing, unvarnished, and unapologetically candid treatise on human sexual experience and potential. This book was a masterpiece when published in 1972, and it remains so now. Those who think it merely a "sex manual" have missed the point, and those who think that opinions in matters sexual must always be deferential and sensitive will doubtless be happier with other, less thoughtful books on their shelves.
Comfort is a scholar and a philosopher, a classicist and a biologist and a physicist and a doctor, and he brought the breadth of his erudition to bear on this seminal--forgive the pun--book. Comfort clearly believes that the cultivation of the senses frees us from slavishness in the face of coercive moralizing, and those who have their own moralizing to do--be it from the left or the right--will naturally find this book their greatest foe. I expect Comfort would have smiled at that. Comfort does not accept all sexual habits as healthy-in-their-own-right, as some modern sex-educators do, but instead puts forth a common-sense philosophy of rational sexuality that he believes will help to make us better people, and certainly help us to increase our capacity to love.
Comfort wrote this book (and a few others) in an attempt to free people from the horrors of having their most basic needs--emotional, intellectual, physical and of course sexual--be determined by the injunctions of a culture, any culture. Comfort believed that the individual cultivation of the senses provided the best and most honest way to democratize our minds and our bodies, and he sought to help people realize this potential by teaching them how to express themselves sexually with those they love in a technically competent, mutually trusting, playful and uncomplicated manner. All of this bothers some people, and it is a measure of Comfort's success that it now bothers those who want to tell others how to make love, rather than those who think that we should not make love at all.
Anyone who accuses Comfort of "heterosexism" (as he sometimes is) has not responsibly represented this book. On page 241 of the 1991 edition Comfort writes "All people are bisexual--that is to say, they are able to respond sexually to some extent towards people of either sex...." and "...homosexuality is closely analogous to left-handedness, and may have similar causes in brain function (which makes nonsense of talk about it being `unnatural' or sinful)." Unquote. Comfort is too informed a biologist and psychologist to ever suggest that homosexuality is somehow `wrong,' and insightful specialists will appreciate Comfort's recognition that a minority of homosexuals are profoundly unhappy with their orientation. ("...and the measure, we repeat, of whether it is a problem is whether it causes anxiety and interferes with sexual joy...." p.246/1991). If readers object to Comfort's references to various historical and historically French terms ("a la negresse," "a la florentine," "la petite mort"), they should remember that Comfort has made clear that race is biologically irrelevant (p.136/1991), and that only a fool would attempt to ignore (or worse, reject), the past. Comfort assumes that his readers are responsible and bright, and given the book's sales over the last thirty years, that's a form of respect that most people cherish. And which, alas, some readers do not deserve.
To approach lovemaking as an art and a sacrament is far too much to ask of the average man or woman, (and clearly far too much to ask of the average sex educator), but that didn't stop Comfort from trying. And critically, it didn't stop him from placing that ideal before us. That was part of his genius, and it's one reason this book remains a classic. The cultivation of the senses (to change Peter Gay's phrase) is among the most important developments of the modern era, and more than any other popular writer Comfort has helped to make that development possible. Comfort is a perfectionist and a master, and if you want a glimpse of the sexual potential of which two committed, loving, intelligent and emotionally honest people are capable, then you can do no better than to read this book cover to cover, twice. It was the best in its time, and it's the best now. It will remain a classic long after the latest sexual fad is gone.

Evan is loved by her parents, and yet after having their daughter arrested is still welcome him in their home. Crazy
But, no one, not the police, not her sister, not Emily herself has told her parent squat.

***She gets a postcard from Luke after he sees her picture in the newspaper, she goes to his work. A few days later he takes her on a date. They haven't seen each other for 10 years, jump right into bed, okay, maybe I can buy that... But instant relationship! Both have more trouble then they know what to do with!

Her attorney is family per se (sisters boyfriend / husband ) but some of the things he tells her is crazy!
Evan has a VPO against him for harassing & stalking Emily. She calls the police, they show up to her apartment & he tells them she has been kidnapped and they believe him! This is after she filed a report earlier against him for possible breaking & entering!
Now, I'm a cop, I show up and u have a VPO filed against u, u are at her apartment where she called 911 from panicking because u are there.... I'm pretty sure u are going to jail!
Correct? Not in this book.
Emily is weak, whiney, doesn't tell anyone anything... She tells Luke she doesn't want to see him, but when her sister sees him talking to another girl & tells Em, well she's mad bc he cheated! What? Totally stupid.
I hate women who don't ask for help or tell the whole story just bits & pieces.... Never telling anyone anything until after the fact.
She was fired, why? She thought it would be better not to tell her boss what was going on & that she was missing work to go to court... Only when she is fired, she spills her guts! Little too late, but from real life experience no one fires u for being late a few times nor calling off work a few days! Not when u haven't missed any work in 5 years.... Unless u don't call it.
Playing the victim only when it benefits her.

Just not based of fact, twists laws, makes the victims even more so.... Cops, well it's like a train wreck all the way around! I would love my money back!
Just ugh,,,

Anyone who has ever been stalked, abused, beaten up by a boyfriend knows the hoops you have to jump through. I feel like the author didn't really think about this part of the book.
Emily doesn't think things are that big of deal, while filing the VPO, I feel like she thought it would help her more in her court case.... (The story is too weak to add this into the book, I felt like she thought it was a joke) She isnt even scared of Evan, that's what gets me.
Get ready, the author tries to throw curve balls at you, the story will flip... I was like Hmm.. Can it get any more unreal?
Why is this considered a romance? Because she sleeps with him? They say I love you? OKAY

Oh, you have to keep telling yourself she is 28, believe me you will forget.

OMG, the events that happen in this book are WOW!
Luke has things are happening in the club and Luke gets stab in
the leg, crazy I know. Emily is dealing with a crazy ex that won’t
leave her alone.

This exhaustive bilingual dictionary is the culmination of years of collaboration between educators, linguistic scholars and community informants from the White Mountain Apache Tribe. It also includes dialectical variants from other communities, including the San Carlos Tribe. The dictionary has been compiled with the goal of creating a living, working dictionary that will be of value for cultural, educational, and practical purposes. Among these are the teaching of Western Apache to children, the retention and expansion of the oral and written languages, and the preservation of traditional ceremonial songs and oral history. More widely, the dictionary will be useful to Apaches and non-Apaches in practical applications such as medicine, social work, education, and human services. It also provides through its definitions a wealth of culture, history, and lore supplied by the many community informants.

A wonderful work - a labour of love.

My copy of this excellent book is very well-thumbed by now, and it continues to fascinate me. It begins with a pronunciation guide which I found easy to understand, although a little more explanation of the silent "l" sound would have been useful. This is followed by a description of the Apache verb complex. "Complex" is the word! - but it gradually became more understandable after I had been using the dictionary for a little while. The verb-forms of "to handle" come next; this is a crucial aspect of the language, and is simply and intelligently presented here. Prefixes, suffixes and affixes follow - again, very useful information.
The layout of the dictionary is logical and serves to illustrate the kinds of linguistic connections which the Apache make - connections which are as different as possible from the ones which English speakers make. For this reason, I suggest that some knowledge or investigation of Native American culture would be a great help to users of this dictionary. It has certainly inspired me to seek out such information.
In sum, this is a work of great scholarship, and has been compiled with real love of the Apache language. It's a treasure to own.

Living languages from the past�

This book was created as a way to help save the Apache language. "The primary audience for this book is the Apaches who are learning to read and write their own language." (From the Preface and Acknowledgements Western Apache-English Dictionary.)
The goal was to standardize the language so that all Apaches keep their rich heritage in today's bilingual, bicultural society. This version contains over 10,500 Apache / English word and over 4,400 dialect versions.
For me the Western Apache-English Dictionary is much more. I was born on the White Mountain Apache Reservation when the Apaches allowed peoples other than the Mountain Tribe to live there. My inability to live in the small town where I was born is reasonable -- it is due to combating simple attrition that has caused many native cultures to merge into others and disappear.
However, my heart and soul are linked to the blood of the land. When I discovered this book, which was compiled by Editor Dorothy Bray in collaboration with the White Mountain Apache Tribe, I felt as if I had found the manna in the desert.
Not only does this book contain the cross-reference between English and Apache words, it has the grammar, verb construction, changes in writing conventions, the Apache alphabet, and how to pronounce the words using the unique Apache marks.
The book format has sufficient white space to make it easy to associate the words, and to study the grammar rules. After these rules are meticulously detailed the next section is the Apache word translated to the English equivalent; the second is reversed. All of this care makes it easier to research or enhance linguistic skills.
For the Writer:
Most writers love dictionaries, reference books, and the etymology of words. Why would a writer want one more dictionary?
One answer is that we writers can "only cure" our addictions to books, words, and diverse languages by getting every book in the universe -- it is a long, constant quest. However, we do this to increase the veracity of researched details within the plot that allows readers to suspend disbelief making the story more than entertaining.
My word processor will not place the correct markings in the Apache words, but I will provide a few of the Apache words and English associations. If you intend to write a story set in Fort Apache or the surrounding area then you should purchase this book for reference. These genres include: S/F time travel, histories of the old West, historical romances, fantasies such as "A Connecticut Yankee in King Author's Court" except the hero finds he is facing Geronimo.
This section includes some of the words; please note the slashes between meanings because they indicate different dialects:

My son thanks me for sending him this book. This is what he says:

"It is really well written and has many world/phrases that are helpful. It covers the Western Apache's Dialect from the Arizona and White Mountan Areas.

It has some differences from other bands of Apaches. LIke 'nnee' --people/apache and 'indoa' white people/whiteman in the Chirichawa dialect."

He goes on to say that the book does touch on verbs and alphabet but explains that a lot of words are full sentences. That he spent so much time to write details and share what he was learning through this dictionary shows that the gift was really appreciated.

Very well done product!

The Quality isn't a good explanatory variable for the price

Actually I do think that this book is too expensive, it is not worth to buy it. It spends five chapter (167 pages), more than 60% of the book, to teach matrix algebra, reader can easy read the detail matrix algebra review from many econometric texts such as Greene and Johnston. I don't think this part is helpful. For the last three chapters, it just discuss the material about OLS, all of these can be easy found in some introductory econometric text. I don't think it is very useful for anyone to read this book before studying other econometic text.

Excellent Linear Algebra Review

Well, I was a student of Professor Dhrymes, so I am a bit biased as a reader. This book would be extremely helpful for a 1st year graduate course in Econometrics, as it contains many useful linear algebra results. I am glad it was reprinted, as we had had to use photocopies of the previous edition.

Best Book On Mathematical application in economics

I have done masters degree in MATHEMATICS and have done some management courses also. Here I am a PROFESSOR in a COLLEGE where students do B.SC. from LONDON university under EXTERNAL PROGRAM. One of the subjects I teach is "MATHEMATICS FOR ECONOMICS". This book has not only no alternate but also written in very simple way with technical examples and flow diagrams. My students last year got the DISTINCTION in this subject and this year I am also expecting DISTINCTION again from students. So I wanted to contact the auther and compliment the person. Finally as a teacher I would recommend strongly this book for the students of BSC. in Mathematics for economics as this book has a number of mathematical topics that are of great importance in the study of classical econometrics. And this is according to said syllabus.

About the Author

Frank Mittelbach is manager of the LaTeX3 Project, in which capacity he oversaw the release of LaTeX 2e. He is the editor of a series of publications on tools and techniques for computer typesetting.

Michel Goossens is past president of the TeX Users Group. A research physicist at CERN, where the Web paradigm was born, he is responsible for LaTeX, HTML, SGML, and, more recently, XML support for scientific documents.

A full decade has passed since the publication of the first edition of The LATEX Companion--a decade during which some people prophesied the demise of TEX and LaTEX and predicted that other software would take over the world. There have been a great many changes indeed, but neither prediction has come to pass: TEX has not vanished and the interest in LaTEX has not declined, although the approach to both has gradually changed over time.

When we wrote the Companion in 1993, we intended to describe what is usefully available in the LaTEX world (though ultimately we ended up describing what was available at CERN in those days). As an unintentional side effect, the first edition defined for most readers what should be available in a then-modern LaTEX distribution. Fortunately, most of the choices we made at that time proved to be reasonable, and the majority (albeit not all) of the packages described in the first edition are still in common use today. Thus, even though "the book shows its age, it still remains a solid reference in most parts", as one reviewer put it recently.

Nevertheless, much has changed and a lot of new and exciting functionality has been added to LaTEX during the last decade. As a result, while revising the book we ended up rewriting 90% of the original content and adding about 600 additional pages describing impressive new developments.

What you are holding now is essentially a new book--a book that we hope preserves the positive aspects of the first edition even as it greatly enhances them, while at the same time avoiding the mistakes we made back then, both in content and presentation (though doubtless we made some others). For this book we used the CTAN archives as a basis and also went through the comp.text.tex news group archives to identify the most pressing questions and queries.

In addition to highlighting a good selection of the contributed packages available on the CTAN archives, the book describes many aspects of the basic LaTEX system that are not fully covered in the LATEX Manual, Leslie Lamport's LATEX: A Document Preparation System. Note, however, that our book is not a replacement for the LATEX Manual but rather a companion to it: a reader of our book is assumed to have read at least the first part of that book (or a comparable introductory work, such as the Guide to LATEX) and to have some practical experience with producing LaTEX documents.

The second edition has seen a major change in the authorship; Frank took over as principal author (so he is to blame for all the faults in this book) and several members of the LaTEX3 project team joined in the book's preparation, enriching it with their knowledge and experience in individual subject areas. The preparation of the book was overshadowed by the sudden death of our good friend, colleague, and prospective co-author Michael Downes, whose great contributions to LaTEX, andAMS-LaTEX in particular, are well known to many people. We dedicate this book to him and his memory.

A True Companion

Pocket Review: *The* bible to keep on your desk if you use LaTex.

I love type. Ever since I got into computers, back when high resolution was a 132 column printer, I've tried to find ways to play with typesetting and fonts. I wrote a basic layout system in OMSI Pascal that drove daisywheel printers. I got to be quite an expert at nroff and troff. I used to hunt (without success) for a free copy of Scribe. I played with Lout, and a dozen other packages. But nothing, ever, held a candle to TeX when it comes to the quality of the output it produces.

Ignore for the moment some of the uglier fonts than some TeX users employ, and look instead at the pages. Hold them up at a distance and admire the uniformity of the gray: no rivers of white to be seen. Look at the bottoms of the page: if the typesetter didn't totally goof off, they'll be vertically balanced: an open spread is
the same height on both pages (TeX'll add tiny amounts of leading to make it happen). Dig into the line-breaking, and you'll find optimization algorithms, which shuffle words back and forth trying to minimize the badness of the appearance.

The output of TeX gives me a lot of pleasure.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for its input. Don Knuth is clearly a genius, but as with all wizards, his creations can be tricky. In the case of TeX, we have a typesetting engine driven by a macro processor whose interpretation of syntax can be changed while it is in the middle of processing individual commands. Raw TeX is scary to deal with, so people don't deal with it. Instead, they use its power to write macro packages, abstracting the low level commands into something more palatable (and tractable). The most widely used of these is Leslie Lamport's LaTeX. LaTeX is at its heart a logical mark up system, documented in an admirably short and lucid book, LaTeX: A Document Preparation System.

But when you want to use LaTeX to do serious work, you need more than this small book. When you want to set complex tables, or handle floating material a certain way, or get your index looking just right, you need the real scoop. And you turn to just one book.

The original LaTeX Companion was one of those books that never got returned to my bookshelf. I used it almost every day for 4 years during the typesetting of five books. Thanks to its wealth of detail, I was able to create press-ready files straight from my computer to the exacting specification of the production departments of three separate printers.

But now, that worn old book has been retired. Mittlebach and Goossens have
produced a second edition of The LaTeX Companion, and it's better in every possible way. In the ten years since the first was published, a lot has changed, and the book captures it all. New packages, improvements in encodings, font handling, xindy: the book describes it all. My copy arrived a couple of weeks before
Mike Clark's Pragmatic Project Automation book was due to go to the printers. I devoured it, and immediately used its advice to improve the appearance of ragged-right text, fix up some font issues in the code listings, and improve the handling of included graphics. Since then, it's been a true companion as I've worked with the typesetting of the new edition of Programming Ruby.

I don't often gush, but if you use LaTeX, or if you'd just like to produce great looking typeset output, you owe it to yourself to get this book.

Finally here - GET YOURS TODAY

I have been a TeX/LaTeX user since 1982, and have authored several classes and styles (newlfm). I just got my copy of the new The LaTeX Companion (2nd Edition). I just love it!! Why? 942 pages of text, 94 pages of the index (YEP!), wonderfully clear examples, 136 pages on fonts, a whole appendix on debugging, 72 pp on mathematics, etc. The book is well-written and uses clearly distinct fonts for user commands, internal commands, etc. There are 138 pages about fonts. In the mathematics chapter, there are 104 examples in the Math chapter alone; one REALLY COOL section shows 10 different font choices and their impact on the typesetting of a small page of mathematics. HOT STUFF!!
In short, there is only 1 limitation to the book: It does not have LaTeX/TeX lion on the front. That is hard to accept. However, everything else is really good. I highly recommend this.

An Outstanding Book

This is, by far, the most useful book I own. The first edition was great, the second edition is nothing short of spectacular. The two-color print is very helpful. Compared to the first edition, which I've been using for just about seven years, the updated package descriptions in the new edition improved my typesetting substantially within only a few days after I got it. Well worth it's price. I hope the authors make a good buck on this, since they are making my life so much easier.

The stated intention of the book not withstanding, I think this is all you'll ever need to use LaTeX, no matter how serious a user you are. Well, maybe a two-page primer of the basic commands in addition. Anyway, I've never used Kopka's book and I never touched Lamport's. Not because they're bad, but because I never had to.

The one small issue I have with the second edition: where did the cute pooch on the cover go?

Why I read this book 4 times and you should too!

I've read at least 100 sales books and 3000 or 4000 marketing books.

I understand a number of reviews on this book weren't favorable. I think I can explain why. And tell you why I read the book 4x times and feel you should also.

1. Here's why this book is exceptional:

Rashaun earns 7 figures in commissions annually.

2. He does this by using about 10 prospecting methods every single day

3. He distributes 50,000 reply cards a month, 5000 flyers a day, and more. He passes out literature daily.

Now, when I sold insurance no one ever gave me ANY of these ideas. They told me call through my book of business and that there were some direct mail letters in a drawer I could look at!

4. He breaks down the number of leads each method generates.

Now there's one thing he doesn't do:

This book doesn't go into in-depth step-by-step implementation details.

For example, there's no sample flyer or even a picture of the flyer he distributes. There is a very rough mockup of his business reply mailer he distributes.

That is the reason I think some criticized the book.

Others said they didn't learn anything. I don't know man. The dude does 7 figures in COMMISSIONS annually. He DOMINATES the sale of family life insurance in NY. He is #1 with multiple vendors in sales.

I've read a lot of books on insurance sales and never saw one this detailed about prospecting. Most books give methods to get referrals or a few things that don't work.

This guy is what he says he is. He says he's a prospecting monster. After you read the book, I can't fathom that you aren't motivated to crank up some prospecting.

I read this book 4x so I could take notes and make sure I didn't overlook something. Plus, it kept giving me ideas.

Now, I don't sell insurance now and haven't for many years. I teach people online marketing skills. Don't expect a lot of online marketing from his book!

But if you want to know how to generate the volume of leads and activity it takes to earn 7 figures in commissions, this IS the book.

Also, what he says MATCHES my own personal experience in marketing. It takes a TON of prospecting activity of some sort to earn 7 figures.

Guys and gals, this book is only 5 bucks. He didn't document this in franchise like detail. It's 5 bucks! Not like $10,000.

This is a massive value for 5 freaking dollars. No joke. I love this book because it inspires me to do prospecting in my own business.

Stimulating, but a real-life problem

Great read, inspiring story, true to the American dream for what is possible in the life insurance business. I was impressed but when I looked him up to verify his story, details started popping up that gave me pause. In short, his insurance license in NYS was revoked, so he's no longer in business doing what the book is about.

I have no idea why, but it may be due to his phoning prospects with pre-recorded messages to consumers (B-to-c) dials. I checked and the practice he describes is illegal. It's not illegal to do B-to-B calling like this, but calling to consumers this way is illegal.

It's unfortunate in a way - he's clearly a unique presence with the gusto and force to have executed what he writes about. I don't doubt he did it all. It's too bad he didn't play within the lines because I'm sure he'd still be killing it.

Because if that I'd recommend against reading it. Instead I would recommend anything by Ben Feldman, or more like Rashaun, Joe Gandolfo. In fact, Joe Gandolfo's "Making Big Money in Selling" is what you should read if you're considering this book. Same total dedication attitude, same staggering work ethic, but Mr. Gandolfo has been in business for over 40 years and is one of the industry legends.

Great ideas, not great editing, writing.

A fast read at under an hour.

The good news is that you get several actual scripts to use, that will help you get appointments. The author also tells you why marketing methods get you in front of buyers....Most salespeople won't do these methods because they aren't taught by the companies. You'll get some good ideas here.

The bad news; The book hasn't been proofread. It's a little hard to follow in spots. It reads like it was written in 6 hours. And the author doesn't have a real command of proper English.

But, if you can ignore the unprofessional way it was edited and written, there are actually some solid ideas to take from here.
